THE RACE STARTS LONG BEFORE THE GREEN FLAG.
Tuesday.
Two workdays left.
Then final prep, load up, point the truck east and put everything we’ve learned to work.
But before any of that happens, there are checkmarks.
Lots and lots of checkmarks. ✔️
And somehow, every time we put a checkmark on the list… the list gets longer. 😂
Seriously. How does that even happen?
Some things are getting crossed off exactly according to plan.
Some are taking a little longer than we’d like.
And inevitably, something that wasn’t even ON the list finds its way onto it before we’re done.
That’s race prep.
The part nobody sees when the car rolls onto the track is everything that happened to get it there.
Every bolt checked.
Every adjustment made.
Every tire prepared.
Every spare packed.
New lines made and picked up.
A race fuel run.
Tools organized and the shop gone through one more time so nothing important gets left behind.
And then there’s feeding the humans. 😂
Groceries purchased.
Food prepped.
Coolers packed.
Drinks, snacks and everything else a traveling race team somehow consumes over a weekend.
And, of course, every “while we’re here, we might as well…” that turns into another hour — and probably another item on the list.
Because apparently the closer we get to leaving, the more our checklist believes it should contribute new ideas. 😂
There isn’t much glamorous about this part.
But there is something pretty special about watching a group of people work through a list together, each handling their piece, knowing exactly what is waiting on the other side of it.
Right now, we’re not counting laps.
We’re counting checkmarks. ✔️
And there are fewer of them left than there were yesterday.
