TBT- Jurgen took this buck in 1998 about 400 yards above camp. He had passed up lots of smaller bucks during the week and one hour before he was scheduled to fly out of the wilderness, we spotted this buck above camp. He and I stalked it, shot it and he still made his flight, but it was close.
I had a lot of fun hunts with Jurgen. After he passed, he left me his two best elk rifles. They are German made and have very smooth actions. American rifle companies make some very fine weapons but there is just something special about German made steel. Jurgen new I had a sweet tooth and I can attest; there is something special about German made chocolate as well.

Many Idaho hunters are finding the sound suppression of suppressors to be easier on their hearing. I wish I had started using them when I was younger. Once you start shooting with a suppressor, you feel like everyone not using one is rude. We have the largest scabbards we can get to accept the longer overall barrel length of the suppressor.

The river is starting to drop already which means low water will start sooner than we hoped for. The good news is that trout fishing is going to probably start being good about mid-June. Clay is looking forward to taking drift boat fishermen this summer.

Sam, Clay and I spent a couple of days clearing trail in the wilderness two weeks ago. The Idaho Outfitters and Guides Association has been relentless in asking for our trails to be clear to keep our public safe. The Salmon/Challis Forest, through direction of the Trump administration, has allowed outfitters to clear trail in the wilderness with chainsaws. Attached is the June blog about this issue. We had some fun filming and thought about making a music video to Guns and Roses- Welcome to the Jungle. Maybe this winter I can take some time to create it. https://www.milehighoutfitters.com/frank-church-wilderness-trail-clearing/

I already posted this picture of Charlie's bull he shot last fall, but we got the cementum analysis back from Matson's Laboratory. The bull was 5 years old.

This past winter was probably the second toughest winter I can remember for chasing lions. The lack of snow made it tough. We had five hunters in the front range. One cancelled out but the other four killed four cats. All of our hunts are 1x1, but we had no fewer than four guides on each hunt just to make it work. John took this lion in February with Sam, Charlie, Clay and me. We still have room for 4 hunters in the wilderness and 2 hunters in the front range this winter.

TBT- Here's a 1997 picture of Pete and Shiley Nelson who own and operate Middle Fork Aviation. Pete started flying about the same time I started guiding. Mile High Outfitters could not thrive without the professionalism of our affiliated businesses. They make us look good!

Last fall, we had a nuisance, camp bear. Carter and Gideon took care of it but not until after it tore the seat off our new Honda ATV, climbed through the narrow slats in our horse trailer and scattered garbage and grain cubes. It had a tag in its ear, so I assume it was not the first time this bear had caused problems.
May 10th is always a nostalgic time for me because it is the opening day of Brown Bear season on the Alaska Peninsula. Charlie is working for Freelance Outdoor Adventures again. Below is a link to a Brown Bear hunt he did two years ago with Lance, the Kuiu team and Bo Nickel. It is a well put together video and if you look hard, you can see Charlie. He's the short one falling through the snow and his back to the camera the whole time.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsYxSuh78Rg
