TBT- 1996, Hank Ge**er and I were hunting out of spike camp. It was a mild November with very little snow. We were looking for elk up high and couldn't find any, so I started glassing down low for Mule Deer. This bull was content to just hang out down low by himself on a little bench. He was trying to recuperate from the rut. He had plenty of grass and water close by and he didn't need to go far for anything. I guess bulls at the end of the rut are like guides at the end of the season. After going hard for three months, you just want to veg out and not do much.

When scouting for rams, finding the oldest ram possible is probably more important to me than finding the largest. The way to age a ram is to look at the growth rings around the horn. The ram in top, center has a very obvious growth ring on his right horn. Because rams beat heads, sometimes the best view of a ram's growth rings is from behind.

TBT- This is a picture of Clay running a rapid on the Main Salmon below North Fork for Rawhide River Trips a couple of years ago. The first rule of thumb for a guide is to never let go of your oars. Even though Clay decided to dive headfirst into the water and leave his guests to finish the rapid with no one to steer the boat, he kept ahold of his oars. I'm proud. In fact, the only way I could be prouder is if he would have just stayed in the boat.

Mother nature's version of pick-up sticks? Actually, under all of these logs is the Bismarck Trail in the Frank Church Wilderness. Charlie, Clay, Jacob and Josh worked hard last month clearing trail. Unfortunately, they did not finish before the July 31 deadline for Frank Church Outfitters to use chainsaws. As hard as this was with a chainsaw, you can imagine how difficult this would be with a crosscut. The reality? There just enough time and manpower with crosscut saws to get the job done.

While the boys were clearing trail the last two weeks, they took time to fish some of the high mountain lakes. I'm always in awe of the color on these fish. The Idaho Department of Fish and Game plant these lakes on average, every three years. Since we purchased Mile High Outfitters in 1995, the fish planted in this lake have been Cutthroat Trout. This last time, IDFG planted Rainbows. Before, it was difficult to tell how old the fish were and how fast they grew but now we can watch these Rainbows and how much growth they gain each year. We have been catching Rainbows for three years and the biggest are about 14" and really fat. I get the feeling that these high elevation lakes, with their short growing season, take their time in producing a 16" fish.
