The SEMO Sun Devils 15U Tuesday night double header was brought to you by Chaffee Baseball for donating the jerseys this summer! Big thanks to their program for investing their equipment, field and time into the up and coming Sophomores.

SEMO picked up a couple more dubyas Tuesday. AG had his first start pitching in game 1 and did a fine job over 2.2ip. Although 5 runs came across during his mound time, 0 were earned. AG pounded the zone and rolled it over to Rolen who would do the same and only surrender 1 hit over 3.1ip while striking out 6. Adam Swinford would close the door in the 7th to preserve the lead and take game 1.

The lead was acquired by 9 of 11 batters finding the hit column. Kale Leggett opened up the scoring after Fowler would induce a leadoff walk by scorching a ball passed third. Travis Arnzen stung the ball both games and started with a line drive single in the first to tie the game 2-2. He was 1-4 game 1 but did score twice and push across 2 more. Mason Vaughn went 2-4, found a run and brought in 3 more. Great night for the young men. Fighting Squirrels 6, Sun Devils 15.

Game 2 Grady "The Animal" Johnson would get start #1 as well on the Summer season. He was SOLID. Going 3 full allowing 1 hit while striking out 6 on 47 pitches. Arnzen would nab 2 outs in the 4th and Kale would shut it down as the rain came. Arnzen, Reischman and Grant J each went 2-2 at the plate. Rolen, Travis, Adam, Dane and Grady would push the runs across in a 7-3 final.

The Sun Devils move to 15-3-1. We will be off until Monday when we take on Advance. A test for sure! Here's to Summer Baseball.

The Semifinals:

Saturday was for the boys, Sunday was for the men. The Sun Devils ran into Sunday afternoons "Bulldogs Wood Bat Classic" as the #2 seed in bracket play. We weren't there to play two games on Sunday, we were there to win two. Before we could consider ourselves the Champs, we had to take down a very familiar foe who has had our number this Summer in the 16U Skeeters holding a record of 2-1-1 over us. With both lineups stacked, it was game time.

Dane McMullin started the game with a 4-0 record and a sub 1 ERA. He ended it with a 5-0 record and a 0.339 ERA. Dane-O would go 6.2IP and outside of two glove clipping outfield near grabs would have had himself a CG. He struck out 8, walked 3 and only surrendered 4 hits. He'd also lead the charge at the plate going 3-3, scoring 2 runs, and stealing 2 bags. Dane was the baller we've been waiting to see do it in a big spot all year, and he balled out.

That man DID NOT do it alone. Grant Johnson was the proverbial wall behind home plate allowing 0 past balls while gutting out the heat. Mason Vaughn, Rolen Reischman, Nolan Fowler and Aiden Grogg all contributed on the RBI scale. They would bring in Adam Swinford, Grady Johnson, Mason Vaughn (a couple times) and Dane himself. Lucas McKinnie along with AG, Grady J, Dane-O, Fowler, Reischman and Vaughn collected all 10 hits for the team. Fowler would shut the door on 9 pitches to move us to the Championship game. Skeeters 2, Sun Devils 7.

The Championship Game Legends v Sun Devils:

"Defense wins Championships". Probably the most used line in sports, probably the one holding the most truth. It rang true once more. Here's how it went down.

All SEMO had to do was score more runs than the other guys, throw strikes, play defense, have everyone do THEIR job, and make the above average plays we've been on the fringe of making all season. In the title game on Sunday, it all came together. Mason Vaughn received the game ball to go out and win a tourney title. He would not leave the mound until the final out was recorded moving himself to 3-0.

Vaughn plugged the first batter he saw on the third pitch of the game. Joiner would single scoring Bealmer on the second pitch he saw from Vaughn. It was 1-0 quick, fast in a hurry. 2 singles later it was 2-0 Legends and still nobody down. We needed a big play and got it on the second pitch of the next AB, resulting in a Fowler 6-AG4-Essner3 double play. 2 pitches later we were on to the bottom of the first. Vaughn would bring home Fowler and advance Reischman to third on a Sac Fly to left. 2-1. Rolen would score to tie on a PB, 2-2 headed to the second inning.

After plunking the leadoff hitter for the second consecutive inning, Vaughn would help himself on the mound. After a FC at second and a single, he induced a 1-6-3 double play for the second of the game in 2 innings.

In the bottom of the second Adam Swinford who had seen every pitch every pitcher had all weekend had had enough. He hammered one to center to start the rally. He'd then steal second. Fowler would take a base on balls. After a Balk moved 'em over, Grant Johnson pierced one passed the diving SS to score Swinford giving SEMO the lead 3-2. Grant was picked off at first and Rolen popped out for out #3.

In the Top of the 4th Vaughn would BB the leadoff hitter and tying run. Allen for EP popped out to Essner after. The defense took over once again. Another 6-4-3 up the middle to end the inning and preserve the lead. BANG! Time to make it hurt.

Bottom 4 Grady finds a way on via error. AG moves him over on the sac bunt, Swinford gets walked, Fowler shoots one to right scoring Grady J. 4-2. Grant puts it in play with 2 down, after a throwing error Fowler would score. Rolen rolls on with a 2 out liner to center scoring Grant, it's 6-2.

Bottom 5 Dane would get on with 2 down and after a hit and run off the bat of Grady J he would score to make it 7-2. Time to hold the lead and take home the MoBat Company, LLC. hardware. That they did. Vaughn would strike out 2 of the 3 Legends he K'd throughout in the 6th. AG gets the final play of the game on a 4-3 to end it. Legends 2, Sun Devils 7.

BIG thank you to Notre Dame for hosting a great tournament and after the post game talks look to host another. Also to MoBat Company, LLC. as the main vendor. If you haven't checked them out yet, you should. The wood bat company out of Bernie, MO has some pretty wicked gear!

To say the coaches aren't insanely proud of how these boys have taken coaching this summer would be an understatement. These fellas heading into their Sophomore year have a lot to learn and prove. Very excited to see how their HS careers play out.

The Sun Devils move to 13-3-1 on the Summer Season. They hold a team BA of .318. ERA of 1.876. Fielding % of .936. Stolen 95 bags. Collected 99 RBIs on 122 hits and touched home 126 times. We pick up and head home to face the Fighting Squirrels 15U on Tuesday for another double header. We're right at the midway point in the season and look to keep rolling. Here's to summer baseball.

Game 1 (pool play): Sun Devils v Legends.

Grady Johnson would get the nod for his first start on the mound, ever. Not only would he accept the challenge, he would give a strong 4 innings while striking out 6 and only walking 2 and allowing 2 to cross home plate. Great damn job young man.

He had all the help he’d need on the offensive side with SEMO scoring 8 runs on 10 hits. The offense was led by Mason Vaughn. He was 2-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs in the box. Lucas McKinnie fresh off vacation in relief of Grady J was exactly what the boys needed. He went 2 innings and finished up the game at time limit.

Sun Devils 8, Legends 5.

Game 2 (pool play): Skeeters v Sun Devils.

Fowler took to the hill on a light pitch count in hopes to do work on Sunday. He did his job on the mound and had we made a couple plays, he would’ve completed at least 3 innings. But baseball is what baseball is and he could only go 2.2ip. Nolan was very effective. Striking out 4 and allowing only one walk and one hit. Dane-O would come in in relief with the same count limitations. He would give us 1.1ip and roll it over to Mr. McKinnie. Lucas gave the boys his best 3ip to save the pen for Sunday. Clutch sir.

SEMO jumped out early scoring 5 in the second only to give 4 back in the third. After the Skeeters would tack a run on in the fourth and fifth innings, the Sun Devils went from looking at Sunday being 2-0, to facing a 1-1 record square in the face entering the sixth inning. Rolen and McKinnie weren’t interested in taking an L. Reischman would single to lead off the bottom half, McKinnie would absolutely pummel a baseball to deep LF scoring Ro to tie the game at 6, which is where it stayed. A tie ensued. Leaving the record going into Sunday at 1-0-1. Skeeters 6, Sun Devils 6.

We move to Sunday and play at 1pm at Notre Dame. The boys will take on the Skeeters and have home field seeding advantage with the 2 spot.

One win you’re in the ship, one loss you’re out, two wins….. you’re the champs.

Here’s to Summer Baseball.

With both teams holding a light roster and SEMO having a tournament this weekend, we agreed to play two 5 inning games. In true baseball fashion Game 1 would go 10 full innings before a victor would be decided. Here's how it went down:

Mason Vaughn took the bump and rolled along as a Vaughn does. He went 3 strong, allowing one run and striking out seven. Efficient he was. Fowler, Vaughn, Swinford and Grady J led the Offensive charge each going 2-4 and combining for 5 of our 8 RBIs. Kale, Dane and Grant J accounted for the other 3. With a 7-2 lead and AG running close to his pre-determined pitch count entering the Top of the 5th, all we had to do was make one above average play (if needed), and throw strikes.

After two walks and an error with two down we had a pitching change. Score was held at 7-3 with two on and two down for THE Travis Arnzen. Travis was thrown directly into the fire for his first appearance of the season and it was his toughest. The first batter he saw worked a full count on 'em, but after a catchers interference, the bags were loaded. Arnzen was close to the zone but couldn't string them together. After a couple more BBs and a hard single with two down, the game was tied 7-7. Arnzen learned everything he needed that game and I can't wait to get him back to the mound. We then turned to Rolen Reischman who recorded out three to move us to the 6th.

Mr. Reischman would not only step in when needed, he would go 5.1 IP, allow one hit and strike out six for his longest and clutchest outing of the Summer Season. To move to the bottom of the 10th the boys went 6-4-3 up the gut and carried big MO right on through. Swinfords single to move Kessler to third would bring Grady Johnson to the dish with one down and the winning run on third.

Grady hammers one to Left to walk it off scoring Kessler. Sun Devils 8, Cape 7.

Game 2:

ADAM SWINFORD gets his first mound opportunity of the Summer games. After gathering up two outs, the ever elusive third of the inning was just that. He put a couple guys on but had the confidence to get it done, and did. Allowing only one run. Grady J leaped into the atmosphere for a line out double play to get the boys into the bottom of the 2nd. SEMO scored four in the bottom half of the 1st in the 3 inning game two, and two runs in the 2nd. Which was all we needed. Fowler shut the door in the 3rd, 1-2-3 with the K ball. SEMO 6, Cape Legion 1.

The Sun Devils move to 10-3 and play at Notre Dame this weekend in a good 'ol wood bat tournament. Should be a great time.

SEMO put two quick runs on the board to start hot on the road. But the Skeeters got to our starter early and changed the layout of the game. Three first inning walks by our starter and four earned in the bottom of one had the Sun Devils down two runs quickly and into the bullpen earlier than you'd want.

The highlight of the night: Grady Johnson. Grady jumped off the bench where he started the game and didn't miss a beat. He headed to the mound with bases loaded and 2 down in the first. He finished the rest of the inning and would hold down the fort for another 4 after. 41 strikes thrown on 71 pitches. Grady had a solid long relief session and kept us in the game.

The Sun Devils did what a young team does. Making mental errors on the base paths and not executing on the "big" plays make it hard to win. The boys did chip away at the lead all night and still had a late chance. After one last mental mistake, the Skeeters took home the W. Defeating SEMO 8-6.

The Sun Devils move on to Thursday evening where they'll take on the Cape Post 63 Freshman squad at home this time. This will start our stretch of double headers that work through the weekend and into early next week. We'll find out exactly who we are, quickly.

Game time, 6pm! Here's to summer baseball.

Game 1:

Cape Legion struck first in the bottom of the First, but scoring would then halt until the Top of the Fifth. Essner rolled through all 60 of his pitch limit for SEMO. Hellwege for Cape had the Sun Devils number for the majority of the game inducing popups and groundouts by simply throwing strikes, 56 out of 90 to be exact.

Grogg at second and Vaughn at third would make max effort plays in the bottom half of the Fourth to keep Cape with a "1" on the scoreboard. A full extension dive by Grogg at second and a full send, glove-to-hand fire over to first from Vaughn at third in stride would move us to the Fifth and keep Cape from tacking on another run.

Dane gets on via error to start the Fifth. Grant singles. Dane and Grant advance on a past ball which would score Dane. Kessler HBP, Swinford HBP. Bases juiced. After a popout for out one, Vaughn then singles scoring one. Reischman singles scoring another. It's 3-1 good guys.

Bottom 5 McKinnie ends the inning coming in during an 0-2 count with 2 down. Gets it done with 2 pitches in relief. Cape would tack one on in the bottom of the Sixth to make it a 3-2 game going into the Seventh and final inning. With the Sun Devils ready to attack and blow it open, they did. Swinford and Grogg both single to start the inning and both would eventually score. Reischman doubles, Essner triples and Fowler would score Essner on a Single. It's 7-2 and all we gotta do is throw strikes in the bottom of the 7th.

Well we didn't and these things happen when you're trying to build confidence on the mound. It takes repetitions, belief in yourself and belief in your team. Something we're building on this summer.

Not to worry though, because Grant Johnson is trying to become a leader for this team and does so by his on field play. He would help McKinnie and the Sun Devils out by gunning not one, but TWO runners out at third to ice the game after a couple BBs, clinching the Game 1 DUB. Sun Devils 7, Cape 2.

Game 2:

In essence of time we played 5. SEMO scores 6 in the second and 1 in the third. Dane threw some strikes as the starter for Game 2. Grady then came in with his best Nestor Cortes Jr. delivery and iced the rest of the game. Striking out 3 in 1.1ip. Sun Devils 7, Cape 0.

The Sun Devils move to 8-2. They carry a .315 batting average a 1.235 earned run average and a .940 fielding percentage through 10 games. Rolen Reischman isn't from planet Earth. With 15 hits in 10 games and team leader in RBIs, one would have to assume he's pretty locked in. Jordan Essner and Dane McMullin are leading the charge in starts and keeping the runs off the board. Dane is collecting the most bags with the Johnson twins on his heels. Here's to summer baseball.

The SEMO Sun Devils Tuesday night matchup with the 14U Fighting Squirrels brought to you by Quad G Construction, for all your home and commercial building needs!

Game 1:

Essner, Reischman, McKinnie and Grant J racked up 10 of the 13 RBIs needed in the 13-3 win. SEMO scored 3 in the bottom half of the first, 3 in the bottom of the third and 7 in the fifth. Capped off by an Aiden G double to give the Sun Devils a 10 run lead and end the game in the fifth.

McMullin, Reischman and McKinnie all contributed on the mound allowing a total of 3 earned over 5. Final 13-3 Sun Devils.

Game 2:

Essner v Graff. Through two innings we were scoreless. Essner for SEMO and Graff for the Squirrels were nearly unhittable. Essner went 2ip on 28 pitches with 20 being strikes allowing no hits and stacking up 5 Ks. Graff was on point for Charleston as well. He went 4ip allowing 1 run on 1 hit striking out 4. His lone hit allowed was a double to Mason Vaughn to start the third. He would eventually score on a passed ball at the plate. 1-0 after 3 with SEMO being "on the road" for game 2.

And then, the bottom of the 4th inning happened. SEMO led the inning off with an error at the hot corner, which Graff would cash in on and single to left building momentum. Followed up by a walk to load the bags. Vaughn picked himself up and struck out the next man he faced for out one. He then walked the next Squirrel to tie the game 1-1. After a blistering single by Mr. Self off of home plate no one could get to, the Squirrels now lead 2-1. Vaughn K'd the next man he saw, but after a passed ball and a couple more errors the Squirrels lead 5-1 headed to the top of the 5th at time limit. With a hellacious rally to bring the game back within one, the Sun Devils didn't have enough to tie and take the lead. After grounding out to Kuykendall with runners on second and third the Fighting squirrels took game two, 5-4.

We head to Cape Central this evening holding a 6-2 record to play the Cape Legion 16U at 6pm. Should be a banger. Here's to summer baseball.
