This is shedded snake skin belonging to the snake that unbeknownst to us, has been living in our house. He actually shed his skin in our house!?!? How the hell long must he have been living with us to shed his skin while living under our staircase?
As I walked down the stairs early in the morning to start the coffee, I saw this snake casually sliding down the these same steps right in front of me, encompassing two steps at a time. He is all black, approximately 18"- 20" long. I shrieked, woke up instantly and screamed for my husband.
I then realized that the night before, a mouse shot out of the bathroom as I used the facilities. This realization sent me into a tail spin. I was in total freak out mode. Mice and snakes? How and why did a snake get into my house and what other creatures are living here that we are unaware of?
We've had a mouse problem this year, not completely unusual for where we live but usually just occasional and easy to handle. This year has been different tho and the day before the snake fiasco I was literally researching exterminators to put an end to the mouse situation only to find that the exterminator had already arrived in the form of a reptile.
Now that i've had a moment to calm down It has become clear to me that this snake has been going up and down my stairs in the dark for some time to hunt the mice that are eating my cat's food. This snake has been casually perusing my second floor as I quietly sleep in my bed!
My husband set a trap, something he is very good at. We don't want to kill the snake so the human exterminator is in hold. I fear this can take a very, very long time to resolve.
