The marathon taper can be a confusing and emotional time. Remember that it’s an incredibly important part of your race preparation.

Ya want the fluffy positive take on today or the reality? Cause as a coach, and actor, I can 💯 put a positive spin on today’s run.

But let’s get real. Sometimes the circumstances, the fitness, the reality - honesty is just best.

I’m not sure who I am or what I’m doing right now. There are days I feel solid and strong and ready to “get back to work” and then those days are followed by 5-20 days of setbacks, or simply feeling flat. It’s a cycle I’ve rarely experienced in the last 12 years, and I hate it.

I know I have to be as kind to myself as I’d advise my runners to be, but it’s always easier to give the advice than to take it.

This isn’t a “pity me” post. I know that when the time is right, and with a lot of work, I’ll be feeling like myself and running my paces again. Instead, this is for anyone out there who’s going through the same thing, or will sooner or later.

Highs and lows, ebbs and flows, they are a part of the journey. And the journey is absolutely worth it.

Based on what my email looks like, lots of you are inspired by recent races and are shopping around for a coach.🥳 First off, I am super excited to welcome new runners to my roster for 2022 - though space will be limited. Therefore, I wanted to field a few common questions and helpful pieces of info:

Now is the PERFECT time to lock down your goals, timeline and how you are going to get there for 2022. A coach cannot give you more time, or “fast track” your adaptations without major consequences like injury. Consider your current fitness vs the demands of your goal, and be honest and realistic about the timeline.

A coach cannot do the work for you, or make you suddenly love running. I want to coach people who take their goals seriously. This doesn’t mean you have to be fast or experienced! It means you are truly wanting to commit to the daily work, and it’s my hope that you love the process.

Communication is key. A coach can’t coach what they don’t know. If you are a poor communicator, you probably won’t get much out of a coach. If you know you work well with certain personality types, communication styles, etc - find a coach that matches yours.

I always limit my roster because I want to truly coach individuals. I discovered a long time ago when coaching groups and charity teams that I couldn’t give the masses the support and guidance I want to - and so I’ve intentionally focused on quality of coaching over quantity. It’s also why I’m not cheap. But let’s face it, you get what you pay for.😅

Your coach should be a wealth of knowledge, so ask them questions. Your coach should also be actively working to better themselves and their business. I am not the coach I was 5 years ago - I am without question much better - because I am constantly wanting to improve.

I just really f*cking love coaching. I want to coach people who love to run and are just as excited to be coached. It’s really that simple. If you think I may be the coach for you, send me an email and we’ll chat. And if you are shopping around, ask coaches questions and be sure you make the best decision for YOU. Because ultimately, that’s what matters.🤗

After taking time off, MRI results showing a tear in my labrum and some bursitis, being able to test my body on a local 5K was such a triumph: ZERO pain or discomfort! I promised I wouldn’t do anything stupid, and aimed for controlled and even effort, never getting greedy.

Turns out I ran a very consistent race (no watch looking!), took the podium, but most importantly felt healthy and had fun.

Considering this was my first “speed workout” since September, I feel gratitude. Also, big shoutout to for suggesting this race, and for running pretty darn strong race despite playing two hockey games last night.💙

Four years ago today, I ran my current marathon PR of 3:03:21 at . It’s wild to think this was four years ago. The last four years have been a combination of bad luck and pandemic, and no real shot to even attempt to knock that number down. If I’m honest, there are moments I question if I’ll get the opportunity. However, like the marathon itself, sometimes being patient pays off. I may not have achieved my goal on the course in Frankfurt that day, but Christopher Keelty] had one amazing adventure, and I have so many fond memories from that trip and race day.

Dear Philly, I’ve missed you! and I came to town for the first time in a while for a family event. This city has a big piece of our hearts. Chris lived here for 5 years. I spent a ton of time visiting him here, and my first race, first half marathon and first marathon all took place on these Gritty streets. There’s still a part of me that fantasizes of moving to a little historic alley in Philly, but for now just being back is awesome. Also, this was our first run together in forever, and C’s longest run in years. 🤗

I’ve been asked twice this week if my name is really Corky Corkum. 🤣 The short answer: No. My parents aren’t that cruel. So if you know me purely from the running community, you probably only know me as Corky - so here’s a quick debrief.

Back in 2014, when I was establishing my own coaching company and LLC, I was tossing ideas out there for what to call my business. I wanted a name that was unique and memorable, approachable, fun and me. With the last name Corkum, my dad and myself have been been called Corky as a nickname by people in our lives - him by his in-laws and me by a few friends from the film industry. Though admittedly, I was overwhelming referred to by my given name far more than Corky at the time. So I tossed out the idea “Coach Corky Runs,” and it sounded perfect.

From establishing my LLC, and as the sole coach/company member, I began introducing myself as Corky. Fast-forward seven years, and it’s safe to say I’m rarely known in the running circle as anything but Corky. And honestly, I’d say my life is now divided by “those who call me Corky” and “those who knew me before.” I sometimes pause when introducing myself to search for which name to use - though this only happens now in non-running encounters. In fact, I’d say my life is made up of 75% “Corky” and 25% not at this point.

And “Corky Corkum” honestly never occurred to me. I just used Corky - like Madonna, or Cher, or McLovin. But when joining the and worlds, I was suddenly listed as Corky Corkum for the first time. At first it made me cringe. I mean, it’s just funny. You absolutely have my blessing to giggle when you read it. 😂

But also, come run with me.
