Artemis II is a historic upcoming spaceflight that will send humans back toward the Moon for the first time since the Apollo era. It is a manned mission designed to test all the major systems needed for deep-space human travel. Four astronauts will fly aboard NASA’s Orion spacecraft, launched by the powerful Space Launch System (SLS), marking humanity’s return to crewed lunar exploration.

Unlike a landing mission, Artemis II will take the crew into orbit around the Moon, performing a lunar flyby before returning safely to Earth. During the roughly 10-day journey, astronauts will test life-support systems, navigation, communications, and spacecraft handling in deep space—conditions far beyond low-Earth orbit. This mission is crucial to proving that Orion and SLS are ready to carry humans farther into space.

Artemis II is a key step in NASA’s long-term Artemis program, which aims to establish a sustained human presence on and around the Moon and eventually pave the way for missions to Mars.
