Wow what a story

In 1930, in West Texas, USA, 38-year-old rancher woman, Ada Mae Wilson, ran a 5000-acre cattle ranch alone after her husband died of pneumonia. The bank said a woman cannot run a ranch, she should sell. The cowboys left because they wouldn't work for a woman.

Ada Mae had 3 children and 300 cattle. She learned to ride, rope, brand, and fix fence herself, in a dress at first, then in her husband's pants. She woke at 4 AM, rode 20 miles a day, mending fence, pulling calves, fighting coyotes. Her hands bled, her face burned in sun.

In 1931, a terrible drought hit. All the ranches around sold their cattle for nothing and left. Ada Mae refused. She dug 3 wells by hand with her children, 20 feet deep, finding water when no one else did. She saved her 300 cattle while others lost everything. She shared water with 5 neighboring ranches, even though they had laughed at her.

By 1935, she owned 1000 cattle and 10,000 acres, the biggest woman-owned ranch in Texas. She never remarried. She raised her 3 children on horseback. When asked how she did it, she said: "They told me a woman can't run a ranch. I told them a mother can run anything that needs feeding, whether it's children or cattle. Both cry at night and need you at 4 AM."

Her ranch still exists today, run by her granddaughter, with a sign at the gate: "Ada Mae Wilson Ranch - Started by a woman who wouldn't sell." Her great-granddaughter says: "Grandma Ada taught us that a woman in pants can do anything a man in boots can do, and do it with children on her hip."

Interesting

A parasite picked up from mountain lion s**t is changing the behavior of Yellowstone wolves, and infected wolves were 46 TIMES more likely to become pack leaders. Researchers studying 26 years of Yellowstone wolf data found wolves infected with Toxoplasma gondii were also 11 times more likely to leave their packs and strike out on their own.

Here’s where it gets wild. Toxoplasma can only reproduce inside cats, and in Yellowstone that means mountain lions. Cougars shed the parasite in their f***s, wolves encounter it while moving through cougar territory, and the parasite infects them. Researchers found wolves living in areas with heavy cougar overlap were far more likely to test positive.

This parasite is already famous for altering behavior. Infected mice can actually lose their normal fear of cats, making them more likely to approach one and get eaten, putting the parasite right back inside the animal it needs to reproduce. Researchers believe something similar may be happening on a much larger scale with wolves. Infected animals become bolder, disperse earlier, and take more risks.

The study does not prove the parasite causes wolves to become leaders, but the numbers are hard to ignore. An infected wolf becomes more willing to enter cougar country, becomes a pack leader, and then leads the rest of the pack through the same areas where more wolves can become infected. A microscopic parasite moving from a mountain lion to a wolf may literally be influencing how entire wolf packs move across Yellowstone.
