It has been over fifteen years since the day I finally became so desperate, so fed up with my sugar addiction and the grip it had on my life, that I was ready to make major changes. I did what seemed utterly impossible–I cut refined sugars out of my diet. There was a fair amount of kicking and screaming and lots of tears, but when I finally settled into a new way of eating, I felt better and freer for it.
So why am I, fifteen years later, about to embark on a 40-Day Sugar Fast? Good question.
I realize looking back that I might have laid down sugar as an idol but I did not lay down food as an idol. Eating a whole foods diet and choosing natural sweeteners over refined ones has not prevented me from cycling in and out of seasons where I turn to food for comfort and control.
In the introduction to the 40-Day Sugar Fast, Wendy Speake says “The goal of this fast isn’t that you will begin to choose healthy food options; it’s that you will come to see Christ as the only option.”
That’s where I fell short before. I found healthier ways of satisfying my sweet tooth. I found creative ways to replace things I gave up, but deep down, I still believed the lie that food could somehow satisfy my deepest longings. I believed that food could satisfy more than Jesus.
And so I am about to embark on a 40-Day Sugar Fast because I’ve reached a point where once again I am desperate and fed up.
But this time the goal is wholehearted surrender and true satisfaction.
And this time I have companions. Many of my Made to Move Fitness class participants are joining me on this journey and you are welcome to join us as well. Join in for either the fast (it is going to be transformational), fitness classes (they are going to be great!), or both.
Message me if you have questions or are ready to jump in!
