As of December 23, Upward Basketball & Cheer at Mountainside United Methodist has one opening for a player at the 2nd-3rd grade divisions, boys or girls. You can sign up for the waitlist, then be added if openings occur. There is also an opening for 1 more Cheerleader!

UPWARD BASKETBALL & CHEER at Mountainside United Methodist Church
Hello Upward families and volunteers!

To all those whose players have been evaluated - Thank you! The evaluation scores will be used to build the teams in as balanced a manner as possible.

If your player has not been evaluated yet, please attend the last scheduled evaluation on Friday evening, October 13, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. We cannot place your player on a team until they've been through the skills evaluation.

If you cannot attend the skills evaluation on Friday, contact me via voice, text or e-mail to let me know. We will schedule makeup evaluations for next week.

There is still space! Registration numbers are slightly ahead of last year. There is still space for more players to register. Let your friends and children's friends know. This has been a very popular league for 10 years. Help us make a great season eleven!

We will have at least one all-girls team in each of divisions K-1st and 2nd-3rd. If you want your young girl to be on an all girls team, let the League Director know (see below to contact) or inform personnel on the night of evaluations in October.

SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE! If you cannot afford the full amount, contact the league director to arrange for a reduced or waived cost.

PAYMENT
The easiest way to pay is by using a credit card. These are only accepted at the online registration.
If you plan to pay with cash or check, you may pay on the evening of the skills evaluation.

EVALUATION
Your player will need to attend one skills evaluation on October 9, 10 or 13 from 5-7 PM. The evaluation is used to build roughly equally skilled teams so that games are competitive and maximize your child's growth.

VOLUNTEERS

Our league is successful because of you, a volunteer. If you would consider being a CHEER COACH, Basketball Coach or referee next season, let John Beach know anytime at 505-250-8046 (voice/text).

You may also want to be part of the management team in some capacity. The commitment spans from 1 month to 6 months depending on how you want to help. The actual time needed is somewhat dependent on your available time, organization and the help of other volunteers. Volunteering for Upward is a great way to grow your confidence and abilities while expanding your horizons,

Help your child build character and get to know Jesus Christ better through Upward Basketball.

The basketball camp scheduled for Monday through Thursday, June 19-23, 2023 is cancelled due to inadequate participation. However, registration for the Upward Basketball season will commence by August. Check back here for details.

Register now for UPWARD BASKETBALL and CHEER at Mountainside United Methodist Church. This is the 10th season of the most popular basketball and cheer program in the East Mountains! Teams from 4 1/2 years old (K4) up through 8th grade, boys and girls.
After registering, attend an orientation and evaluation one evening on October 10, 11 or 14th from 5-7 pm. Practices start November, 1 hour per week. Games start on December 30, go to late Februiary, once per week. This has been a highly successful league serving 200 kids on 28 teams in the past. Register online at www.mumsm.org

Upwards Basketball Update
September 7, 2021

Hello Upwards Basketball Players and Cheerleaders!
REGISTRATION AND EVALUATIONS are scheduled for October 11, 12 and 14 evenings at 5:00-7:00 pm (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday) at Mountainside United Methodist Church. All players must be evaluated. Guidelines:

- Wear a mask.
- Balls will be disinfected regularly.

STATUS
• The Covid environment seems similar to a year ago, but in some ways it’s better. Now, many people are vaccinated, fewer people are hospitalized and fewer are dying. Many children are attending school.

• We are hoping and praying that the environment improves. Infections in the next few weeeks may adversely affect our season. We’ll continue to evaluate the situation. IN THE MEANTIME, WATCH MUMSM.ORG for the latest updates.

• If we have to cancel the league before November 1, all money paid for registration will be refunded. This is easiest if players were registered online and paid with a credit card. We want to have a minimum of 4 teams and 4 players per team in any division by that point.

• If infection rates remain at present levels when the playing season starts in January, we will likely institute protocols similar to what we had planned last year. The protocols contemplated, but not firm yet are:
- Everyone wears a mask while playing, sitting on the bench or spectating (unless drinking from a water bottle).
- Morning K-1 and 2-3 games will be one at a time, centered in the gym.
- Each team will include players from a maximum of 5 families.
- Each spectating family will be limited to 4 people (to limit the number of people).
- People will enter at the main entrance, and exit at the southwest door of the gym to minimize crossing patterns.
- Balls will be disinfected at each period.

• Some of the procedures will be flexible to accommodate variations in players’ particular needs and skills. We’ll evaluate the environment and modify procedures in the coming weeks.


• By the end of October and after, we will evaluate the safety of having a league. With a few protocols, we believe we can successfully and safely conduct our league. You can help - REGISTER HERE:
