The Mavericks High School team traveled to VA Beach this weekend to compete in the NHSCA National Duals. The team started strong on Saturday going 2-1 to advance to the Championship Pool on Sunday where we went 0-3. This trip always a great experience on and off the mat. These boys got better at wrestling and made some great memories doing it.

Aaron Moccia and Cameron Stepp got the job done on the mat AND in the classroom. Congrats to both on being selected for the MSWA All-Academic team. These guys are headed to top universities as a result of their commitment on and off the mat, and have helped continue the standard of academic excellence in our program. This is now the 4th year in a row at least 1 Mustang has been selected to the All-Academic team. Who’s next?

Aaron Moccia named Harford County Wrestler of the Year. This is the 2nd year in a row a CMW wrestler has earned that honor with Kane Desch being name WOTY last year. In addition to Aaron, the Mustangs had 3 more wrestlers named first team All-County: Lucas Heffner (106), Jacob Cox (126), and Cam Stepp (285).

C. Milton Wright’s Aaron Moccia and Bel Air’s Madison Birth are The Aegis’ boys and girls Wrestlers of the Year, respectively.

Aaron Moccia and Cam Stepp are State Champions!

From not placing last year to winning it all this year, Aaron showed what can happen when you commit yourself to the process every day. Once he locked in there was no stopping him. He dominated this weekend pinning 3 of 4 opponents, including a pin in the state finals.

Cam is one of the toughest kids you’ll ever meet with the heart of lion. He battled through countless injuries this season. A month ago we thought his season might be over. But he pushed through the pain to try and help his team win a state title, and in return he has now won himself a state title.

The rest of the team battled tough all weekend as well. Lucas Heffner and Salah Dusmukhamedov both made it to the blood round, one match away from placing. Both will be back next year to make another run. Rory Sweeney went 1-2 for the second year in a row and will be back for more next year as well. Seniors Jacob Cox, Dylan Roche and Carson Windesheim left it all on the mat to end their high school careers with a great postseason run.

That’s a wrap on another phenomenal season from the Mustangs. Region Champs, UCBAC Champs, SnoVerlea Champs, 2 individual State Champions, ranked #16 in the state as a team…and many other accomplishments along the way.
