Castle Rock Bike Skills Park

As part of the CR clean-up day, we had about a dozen volunteers doing maintenance at the bike, nearly all of them from Growlers Gulch Racing. Thanks to Matt Hanna, Dave LeMonds, Clint Fitch, Lizzy Fitch, John Kowalski, Claire Kowalski, Kevin Knorr, Heather Cordero, Rob Larson, Donnie Harlan, Ryane Olin, and Bill Larson.

The crew weedeated the entire park, spread gravel in the parking area, replaced top deck on one of the features, and reconfigured the long skinny that runs along the walking path. Thanks to everyone who came out.

There will be a fundraiser for the park this Friday. Our goal is to get a start toward raising enough money to pave the pump track, which would be a huge upgrade. We could really use your support. Details in the flyer.

The renaissance of the Castle Rock Bike Park began on Saturday with a full-on work party attended by 25 people. Only five mountain bikers were there - Matt Hanna, Dave, John Kowalski, Kris Fowler, and myself - which made me a little skeptical about how much would get done. Very happy to report that the people of CR came out and worked their butts off.

Our goal was to work on the east side of the park and get as many things back in play for kids as possible. We repaired several features and did a lot of clean-up, but - most remarkably - we did a complete demo and reconstruction of the entire elevated trail. It has never been in better shape. Plenty of work to do but this was a great start.

Thanks to all the volunteers but special shouts to the following:

*Matt Hanna for serving as project manager and having all the materials and tools ready on-site.

*Ryane Olin of Columbia Groundwork, who sent three of his carpenters down to work with us. Those guys kicked ass.

*The CIty of CR for sending a machine and operator down to move materials and haul trash. CR mayor Paul Helenberg, whom my brother Dave and I have known since we were kids, even stopped by to lend a hand.

*Bearded Softwash on Castle Rock for eliminating the graffiti at the park.

*Lincoln Creek Lumber for donating the wood.

*Pacific Tech Construction for donating the fasteners.

Here's the forecast for Saturday's work party at the Castle Rock Bike Park: High of 57. Low of 36. 34 percent chance of a.m. showers. This event is NOT weather-dependent.

Bring a rain jacket and good gloves. If you have a tamp, shovel, Brookski, battery-powered drill, or wheelbarrow, bring those, along with enough food and fluid to get you through the day.. Start-time is 8 a.m.

Twenty people showed for an organizational meeting on Saturday with the goal of refurbishing the Castle Rock Bike Park. First work day is next Saturday, April 12, at 8. Bring a lunch and good gloves. If you have a wheelbarrow, battery -powered drill, shovel, or a tamp, bring those as well. This project is going to take some time. Let's get it rolling.

Dave and I spent 3+ hours doing weedeating, repair, and general clean up at the park today. Ran into people from Dallas and Phoenix with a bunch of kids. They absolutely loved the park. Great to see it getting used. The west side is in great shape. Summer won't last forever. Get the kids down there now.

Nice to see kids at the bike park today. Only down side was that quite a few did not have helmets. Every biker ends up on the ground at one time or another. Cuts, scrapes, bruises - even broken bones - heal. Head injuries, however, are another matter. Always wear a helmet.

A huge thanks to Troy and Benji Brightbill for their clean-up work at the park today. It has been in disrepair, primarily because so many of our key people have been overwhelmed with trail work at Growlers.

No photos but the park was booming today. Great to see so many young kids on striders. Only downer is that we did not have a lot of helmets. Arms, legs, knees, shoulders, and ribs all heal. Never risk a head injury for yourself or your kids.
