Friends of the Castaic Shelter

Friends of the Castaic Shelter Volunteer run page dedicated to increasing pet adoptions at the Castaic Animal Care Center
Shelter. Open to the public Monday-Saturday from 11-5. Sadly, NO. YES!

Closed Sundays. Email: [email protected]
Address:
31044 Charlie Cyn Rd
Castaic, Ca 91384 Click link above to schedule an appointment to meet animals. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. Will the shelter allow me to foster? Unless you are an approved foster who has completed the county's foster training class, the answer is sadly no.
2. Does the shelter require I come into the shelter to adopt? Yes, although due to Covid the shelter is currently closed and adoptions or “meet and greets” are by appointment only. If you are out of state and can find a 501(c)3 rescue who is an adoption partner of the Los Angeles County shelter system (DACC) they will be able to pull the pet for you.
3. Does the Castaic Shelter ship animals? No, the shelter doesn’t have the budget or manpower to ship animals.
4. Is the Castaic Shelter a "no kill" shelter? The shelter is far from a "no kill" shelter. The staff does not want to euthanize any animals - but unfortunately the shelter's intakes far exceed the adoptions. Castaic Shelter is not a rescue so please be aware that if you surrender an animal it may not get adopted.
5. Can you help and if so how? If you are local you can sign up for the volunteer training program, but volunteer training is currently on hold due to Covid. You can always help us by networking and sharing our animals. If you wish to donate to our charitable arm, the "Dreams Come True" charity which provides outside medical help to pets at the Castaic Animal Care Center, you can do so by sending a tax deductible check to the shelter. No donation is too small! This page promotes the adoption and rescue of pets from the Castaic Shelter. All dogs and cats who are included in this album are at the Castaic Shelter and urgently in need of adoption or rescue.

armony was surrendered because....she chased a running child and nipped. This is her herding instinct and not at all an act of aggression. A good example of why researching a breed is so important.
She is a 2-yr-old 31 lb Queensland heeler aka cattle dog. Harmony is affectionate, loves the ball, knows sit and down and is good on leash. She previously lived on a ranch and was fine with the farm animals.

Harmony would do best in a home with no small children, and someone familiar with the breed.

Come meet her Mon-Sat 11-5 at

🌙 MEET MOON 🌙
She’s ready to dance her way out of the shelter and into the moonlight… and then into a HOME! 🖤🐾

At just 1 year old and 56 pounds, Moon is a beautiful black German Shepherd who absolutely LOVES toys—and even better, she’ll bring them right back to you! 🎾 She also gets along with large dogs and would make a wonderful adventure buddy for someone looking for a fun companion. 🖤

Black dogs are often overlooked in shelters. Don’t let her color make you scroll past her—she could be your perfect match! Moon is available to ADOPT or FOSTER!

TIME IS UP 💔 the SADDEST story ever! Zae was surrendered because his owner moved! But wait, that is not the sad part. The sad part is Zae was left alone, in the yard, 100% of the time! Zae was extremely under socialized. But his human did share that Zae occasionally chases the ball. And they said Zae runs around the yard when someone walks their dog near by. Probably his only source of entertainment. Volunteers have found Zae likes to play ball a lot, seeks affection, and walks ok on leash. He was used to help train new volunteers and loved them all!!!

Staff are requiring an adult only home. Zae is listest as a 6 year old, 33 pound Shiba Inu and he is extremely URGENT‼️

RESCUE ONLY! NOT AVAILABLE FOR PUBLIC ADOPTION. R***r didn’t know, you don’t bite the hand that feeds you! Even if it is a rubber hand poking you while you eat. R***r was surrendered due to a new baby! But his family let us know what a great pup he is. They said he is good with all animals and humans. He has basic training and is house and crate trained. R***r is a playful puppy. But he acted out once and is now RESCUE ONLY. R***r, is only 9 months old, and 39 pounds! Please forward R***r’s reel to all the rescues you know so R***r can get rescued and find his forever family. R***r promises to be your goodest boy! 🐶🐾 SAVE R***R!
R***r Behavior Notes: Due to behavior displayed in the kennels with a staff member, a resource assessment was conducted. After playgroup he walked into the play yard on leash. The leash was clipped to a fence as precaution. The handler placed a bowl of wet food in front of him. He began to eat it, and the handler waited a few seconds for him to start enjoying the food. The handler used an assess-a-hand to conduct the resource guarding assessment. The handler began to move the hand towards the food bowl, he froze with a tense body. The handler moved the hand to touch his paw and pet his back while he was eating. He started to growl while he continued to eat. When the handler went to pull the food bowl away with the hand, he growled and bit the hand. The food bowl was pushed back towards him, and he started growling at the hand. After he finished his food, the handler used the hand to remove the bowl. He growled and snarled at the hand. The assessment was ended at this point. Due to the behavior displayed during his assessment, he will be designated as RESCUE ONLY, LARGE DOGS OK, MEDIUM ENERGY.

Bonded Pair! Puppy and Roxy were surrendered because their family moved somewhere that they weren’t allowed. Now they are at the shelter hoping to stay together. Their bond is obvious and we all hope they are adopted together. They were ok with calm dogs in playgroup. Volunteers are working on trust and confidence. These girls will thrive with a loving family who will give them plenty of love and continue their training. Please come by for a visit!
