Had a huge surprise at class last night. Professor Eddie Avelar and his family were in town visiting relatives and decided to drop in for class. Learned a lot of new tips and tricks as well as shoring up some details on some basic techniques. Words can not describe how much I appreciate the amount of support and kindness that I have received from the Avelar’s since joining CMJJ. They are not just exceptionally great martial artists but also some of the best people I know. I was honored to have them on the mat with us last night.

In martial arts, people often ask why lineage matters.
Why not just go rogue? Why not buy a curriculum online, print certificates, and build your own system?
Because lineage is more than techniques.
Lineage is accountability. It’s history. It’s mentorship. It’s pressure. It’s someone above you who can still correct you.
Anybody can purchase a program. Anybody can watch instructionals. Anybody can call themselves “Professor” in today’s world.
But standing under someone like Carlos Machado means you are tied to something bigger than yourself.
It means your students are connected to decades of knowledge, mistakes, refinement, competition, teaching, and culture that existed long before you arrived.
As an academy owner, I don’t see lineage as weakness. I see it as humility and responsibility.
A lone wolf academy may move fast… but a connected academy has roots.
When I fly the Carlos Machado flag, it’s not because I can’t think for myself. It’s because I value having elders, standards, structure, and a tribe that sharpens me.
Could I walk away and do my own thing? Sure.
But martial arts was never meant to be built entirely alone.
The belt around my waist has a story attached to it and I believe that story matters.

Had a great time celebrating the 25th anniversary of my 25th birthday and 25 years of teaching martial arts in Cassville. Super huge thank you to my wife, Michelle, as well as Maria West and Faith James for making this all happen from decorations to organizing the event. Shout out to the great people from Sweets on Wheels for providing the great treats for the kids and parents.

Academic All-State Football honors student-athletes who excel both on the field and in the classroom.

Nominees must be a starter on offense/defense or be a punter or kicker in 70% of games, be in grades 10–12 and be nominated by their head coach.

➡️Players must meet at least two of the following: a 25 or higher ACT score (or 1200 SAT), a 3.5 unweighted GPA or ranking in the top 20% of their class.

We are proud of these young men for working hard on and off the field!

Had an awesome night last night. One of my oldest and best friends, Mr Al Bailey stopped by to teach our Jiu Jitsu class some of the craziest and most painful wristlock submissions ever.
