A Roman Legionary in Lorica Segmentata wearing the "Niederbieber type" of Italic Weisenau Helmets. This highly protective helmet afforded maximum facial, neck, chin, and upper back protection, albeit with limited hearing capabilities. The only exposed area is a "T Zone" in front of the eyes, nose, and mouth.

The elevated high strong reinforcing, approximately a full inch high of solid bronze, is clearly visible. This level of cross-braced strengthened bronze renders impact damage to the metal of the 'helmet cap' extremely difficult. This iteration began to appear in the late 2nd Century AD and was in widespread use throughout the 3rd.

Once the benefits of this helmet became apparent, it is likely that soldiers would have sought to acquire one. This helmet would have a lasting impact on the design and aesthetics of Roman helmets from this time forward.
