New research adds to a growing body of evidence that strength training may protect the brain from Alzheimer's disease.

A study published in the journal Age and Ageing found that a 24-week strength training program triggered protective changes in vulnerable brain regions. The benefits were strongest in people who already had early Alzheimer's biomarkers in their brains.

The study enrolled 90 cognitively unimpaired adults between 65 and 80. Participants were randomly assigned to either a supervised resistance exercise program or a control group. The exercise group trained three times per week for 60 minutes, using elastic bands and bodyweight exercises.

That finding builds on a separate 2025 study published in GeroScience, in which older adults who did six months of weight training improved their ability to recall recent events and information. They also had less brain shrinkage in critical regions.

The studies suggest your brain gains major benefits, even without devoting yourself to extensive, intense training.
