PowderKegg Wildlife Preserve is an evolving vision of Andrew W. Sabbagha that started in January 1986 when he purchased the first tract of raw land…only trees, vegetation and some animal life existed. He is truly an artist... his mind is the palette...the property is his canvas. His imagination and ability to create is amazing! He has spent energy and time often to the detriment of his health to c

reate this wonderland! During his childhood, he watched as his father built ponds and learned how to avoid mistakes in construction. In his life, he has had over 40 years experience in the construction and general contracting. In 23 years, his company, Southern Design and Construction Consultants, Inc., built over 400 church projects in 6 states. While he was operating his church building company, he was constructing Powderkegg during his off hours. On PowderKegg Wildlife Preserve during the last twenty years, he has built three ponds with dams that range from 20 to 26 feet deep with excellent fish habitat. The ponds offer over 600 feet of docks for fishing and wildlife viewing. The acres of wood stick-ups and fish habitat plus many supplemental fish feeders provide a great population of fish. Andrew has also built road systems throughout the hundreds of acres, a Residence Lodge, fish camp, out buildings, deer stands & condo deer stands, 8 stall stable, jumping arena, dressage arena & pasture fencing, gazebo and arched bridge. In the first ten years, he created an environment to attract the local whitetail deer. After that point in time, he spent much money in fencing materials alone to build the high fencing that surrounds the entire Preserve (which is now grandfathered under SC Law...no more high fence preserves may be built in SC. This makes PowderKegg Wildlife Preserve even more special!). This fence allows the preserve to be maintained in the manner it is managed today. The results of Quality Deer Management are mature trophy whitetail deer native to South Carolina and an abundance of wildlife. Since Andrew closed his church building business in 2006, PowderKegg Wildlife Preserve LLC has become a retirement income. 2005 was the first commercial year for Trophy Whitetail Deer Hunting at PowderKegg. 2007 was the first commercial year for Trophy Fishing at PowderKegg. Fishing is managed to promote great fishing year after year. Andrew designed & built the Gazebo and Bridge on the island in front of the Lodge. 2008 was the opening year for the Gazebo Island Event Site Rentals which allows others to enjoy the beauty and security of PowderKegg Wildlife Preserve as a social event. Overnight Retreat lodging is always available so guests too can escape to nature and enjoy the serenity of the Wildlife Preserve or take advantage of our specials, either at the Main Resort Lodge or at Pond 3 Waterfront Lodging. Both have waterfront views. Arranged in advance, Guests may Ride the Perimeter or the miles of trails with their horses. PowderKegg Wildlife Preserve is the home of Andrew & his wife, Jeanie.

This is a Journal that I created to follow the activities that Andrew & I were engaged in while operating PowderKegg Wildlife Preserve during the time period of September 27, 2015 through November 6, 2017.
I kept it private. It was Our Life.
Now, I am publishing it as a memorial.
Andrew was always active. I always helped him with his ideas... and worked to keep him healthy.
We enjoyed our adventures together.
I will always cherish my life with my man, Andrew.

Fire in the Hole! Andrew taught me how to sight in a powder gun. It was very interesting.

Saturday, November 4, 2017 was put out Deer Blocks on the Kegg day. Andrew drove and I jumped out of the truck to show his son-in-law where to put the Purina Antler Max deer blocks, while his daughter helped his great-granddaughter on & off her folding chair on the back of the truck so she could put a cob of hard corn at each location. The Fall leaves were beautiful and the temperature was in the upper 70's. We had a wonderful time!

Due to the temperature getting down to 31 degrees on Monday morning, we 'winterized' everything on the 'Kegg yesterday, which took about 2 hours because a lot of items on the annual list had already been handled. Now, today, the highs will be around 82 degrees. Love the Fall in Cassatt, SC! :-)

October 19, 2017, rode Shadowboxer over to the Point to check out the trail that Andrew had recleared for me. Saw evidence of where he had planted the deer food plot in that section with the No-til which was Abruzzi rye grain. Don't know exactly when he sowed that.

October 5, 2017, Andrew sowed more Abruzzi Rye Grain Seed for deer food plots in the lower Gasline and at Doe Lane 3 (farthest from Pond 3). This was done with the No-tiller.

October 1, 2017. The temperatures were in the 50's this morning. Andrew planned to cut grass. I had already bought 4- 50 lb bags of Abruzzi Rye Grain seed to plant the deer food plots for this winter. Our assistant had put the seed in the no-till hopper about a week ago. So, I suggested that he needed to plant the seed instead. The tractor was attached to the no-tiller, so he planted the Lease Field and the Dorn Field. It was too late in the evening for me to climb up and check to see how much seed was left.... will do that tomorrow! :-)

September 24, 2017. Starting around 1:30 pm and ending around 6 PM, Andrew sprayed Cimmaron w**d killer on Lease Field and Dorn Field hay portions. He really pushed himself to get it all done in one afternoon. Nothing that I say will make him take it easier on himself.

I cannot stop the man from working! The weather forecast is for rain for the next 10 days, so he had me buy 5 bags of 10-10-10 fertilizer and 5 bags of Nitrogen from L&K Supply in Bethune to distribute on the large pasture. I picked them up at 9 AM August 5, 2017. He was not feeling good when I returned with the bags. I told him to rest... It could be done another day. I had to do another project off site and did not return until after 3:30 PM. He had the New Holland tractor with the whirlybird attached behind the truck. He had already spread the Nitrogen and was ready to dump the 10-10-10 bags into the whirlybird. He pushes himself too much. I cannot understand that!!!

August 3, 2017. Shortly before 4 pm, baling on Dorn field started. We were finished loading & unloading hay by 6 pm. 58 bales created from that field. Now, we need to get some nitrogen on the fields.
