Platte River Judo Platte River Judo What is Judo? A competitive Olympic sport, a modern martial art and means of self-defense. It has been an Olympic sport since 1964.

Judo, translated from Japanese, means “the gentle way.” This is due to many techniques used in judo that require a person to give way to the force used by an opponent. By giving way, you allow the opponent’s own force to be used against them. Judo was developed by an educator, Dr. Jigoro Kano, in 1882. It is one of the most popular sports practiced worldwide. Why should we study it? Dr. Kano, the

educator, developed Judo not just for the sake of physical activity, sporting purposes, or self-defense, but as a way of life. “As a way of life” does not mean it is some kind of pseudo-religion; it means that you apply what you learn through the practice of Judo into everyday aspects of life. The two core principles that Kano put into Judo are: “jita kyoei” and “seiryoku zenyo.” The first, jita kyoei, means “Mutual benefit and welfare. The second, seiryoku zenyo, means “Maximum efficient use of effort.” Now if you take those two principles that we learn in Judo and apply them to other situations in life, you may see how and why Dr. Kano hoped Judo would help us to be better people; not just better athletes. Located at 1911 Dunlap, inside the Casper Pickleball & Sports Complex,, we offer a safe, friendly, environment in which everyone is welcome to come and learn Judo. Whether you're a competitive grappler looking for techniques to add to your game, or you're just looking to be physically active and have fun, we have something for everyone. We accept students 5 years old - adult.

Please mark this one on your calendar and plan on attending!

SLC is always a great venue for Nationals...and it is actually within a reasonable driving distance for us.

It is an opportunity for ALL JUNIORS to compete in this National Championship (in their appropriate skill/rank divisions).
This is also a direct Team USA qualifier for some divisions.

(Colorado Springs, CO) – USA Judo is pleased to announce the return of its Youth National Championships to Salt Lake City, Utah, for 2027. The event was last held in Salt Lake City in 2025 and annually draws more than 600 of the nation’s best athletes,...

You've heard it for years around our dojo: It isn't about the medals. It is bigger than that.

This is one of the best/most competitive judoka to ever do it, speaking at a camp in Italy this week...

Pay attention. It isn't about the medals. It is bigger than that.

Hey folks- JUDO IS CANCELED TONIGHT!!!

Sorry. I came in for kids' class and there was a leak from the roof. We have some standing water on the mats and it is actively still dripping down. Nothing crazy, but definitely enough to interfere with classes.

We'll get staff up there and get it looked at!!

Sorry!!

Some of you may have noticed that Landon and I were missing for the last few classes.

We were in Fargo at the Marine Corp Recruiting Junior Nationals, literally the biggest wrestling tournament in the world- 8500 high school age wrestlers over the week. Landon was competing, and I was part of the Team Wyoming coaching staff.

Landon had qualified earlier in the year, and this was the culmination of his first Olympic style season. While it did not end the way he wanted, he did pretty darn well! He won some matches, progressed well into the second day of competitions, and was able to hold his own against nationally ranked/experienced wrestlers. That doesn't sound like much, unless you have been to Fargo...The sheer number of wrestlers that are there, and the number of them that go 0-2 is crazy. And these are all good wrestlers. In short: this tournament is extremely tough to win anything.

Wrestling season is finally over for both Landon and I, so we'll be back on the judo tatami full time now.

I think we have a few judoka still hitting up some wrestling camps...so once everyone is done, I will likely post a spring/summer recap.

Since this is how the mats look currently, at 7PM, I am assuming the 6:30 class will be fairly light? 😐

We almost made it to the 4th of July before I got no-showed this summer...So not too bad!

On a serious note: I know folks are enjoying the weather, and I WANT kids to be out and experiencing the summer activities...Just please give me a little head's up though? If nobody is planning on coming to a class, I could spend a rare evening at home with my family.

Happy Father's Day!
