In roughly 10 states, formal driver education materials and manuals offer minimal to no required instruction on navigating modern cycling and safely sharing the road. There is no enforced uniform national curriculum covering bicycle safety and road use. The lack of education, enforcement, attention, and patience are main culprits of cycling & vehicle related tragedies.
In most states, at most one bicycling-related question is required on the exam to obtain a state driver’s license, and roughly a dozen states require none.
Safety with cyclists is treated more as a footnote rather than a full lesson. Too many lives have been ruined. We deserve better. They deserve better. Our hearts go out to all those effected by this injustice.
