Some of the most overwhelmed caregivers I know are also some of the most capable.

They're used to figuring things out, so when caregiving gets harder, they research more, organize more and take on one more thing.

But caregiving isn't a problem you can solve and check off the list. The needs keep changing while the rest of your life keeps moving.

Sometimes the answer isn't getting better at handling everything.

Sometimes it's realizing you don't have to handle everything by yourself.

That's one reason I created Pivot with Purpose, my 8-week virtual skills + support group for adults navigating life with aging parents.

Watching my granddaughters paint together this week got me thinking about caregiving…

The goal wasn’t for one child to take the brush and finish the painting for the other.

The goal was support, encouragement, and creating the conditions for success.

Supporting aging parents often asks the same of us.

How do we preserve dignity and independence while still keeping someone safe?

Those questions rarely have simple answers, and they’re exactly the kinds of conversations we’ll be having inside my caregiver skills and support group starting in August.
