🩷October is World Menopause Awareness Month. I've been studying and researching menopausal health for quite some time now, and alcohol consumption has been a relevant topic when it comes to womens mental and physical well-being. There is soooo much I wish I had known 10 years ago on the affects of alcohol on your body short and long-term.
🦋FACT #1
Compared to men, women have less water in their blood to dilute alcohol. So, the alcohol they do drink is going to be more concentrated.
🦋FACT #2
Older women are likely to have less body water than younger women. That means drinking the same amount will result in a higher blood alcohol concentration for older women
🦋FACT #3
Despite the fact that age decreases our ability to tolerate alcohol, midlife and older women are drinking MUCH more than previous generations - and having more health problems, including alcohol-related emergency room visits.
🦋FACT #4
For years, media has promoted the "fun lifestyle" story about alcohol. Recent studies now confirm the opposite, we now know alcohol consumption poses more risks than benefits, even at low doses -especially for women in midlife and beyond
🦋FACT #5
Because of the health risks, most women would benefit from capping things off at moderate consumption...and probably even less. Moderate consumption is considered 5-7 drinks per week(1 per day)
🪻Given all these facts about women, alcohol and aging. Do you need to ditch completely?!?! It depends...
Genetics, body size, liver health, medicine use, and age all affect how the body metabolizes alcohol.
🌸There are so many ways to experiment or explore drinking less. Remember, it doesn't have to be all or nothing. Look for ways to rack up small wins when it comes to alcohol consumption.
