Victorian Fencing Society A society formed for Research, Training and Demonstrations in the culture and fashion of fencing from the 19th Century. Pollock, F.C. No experience is necessary.

The Victorian Fencing Society was formed in 2011 for the Research, Training and Demonstrations in the culture and fashion of fencing from the nineteenth century. We meet for monthly practice in nineteenth century fencing techniques at the Fencing Institute of Texas. President and Instructor Jonathan Carr started fencing in 1984 and has been coaching fencing since 1997. Our primary manuals of study

come from the Fencing volume of the Badminton library published in 1889 by Walter H. Grove and Camille Prevost, Foil and Sabre by Louis Rondelle published in 1892 in Boston, and Alfred Hutton’s treatise on Saber called Cold Steel published in 1889. The society is open to all individuals interested in studying the history of fencing in the nineteenth century. The Victorian Fencing Society demonstrated Scottish Highland swordsmanship at the Celtic Weekend of the Scarborough Renaissance Festival. Recreating the gladiatorial Prize Fights of the 18th century, members divided in to two teams of Scots and Irish, fighting for the glory of their nation with broadsword, targe, smallsword and dirk.

The Victorian Fencing Society demonstrated 19th century Bowie knife techniques at AudeliaFest, a festival at the Audelia Road Branch Library celebrating the 19th century pioneering family of Ardelia Ellen Jackson. Other activities included an historical exhibit, guest speakers, pioneer crafts and activities, and a guided tour of McCree Cemetery. Thanks to VFS members Kyle West and Curtis Rochelle for their demonstration.

On Sunday November 16th the Victorian Fencing Society held its 11th Annual Grand Assault of Arms at the Farmers Branch Historical Park. Demonstration matches were held with the Foil, the Dueling Sword, the Military Saber, and the Bowie Knife. Following this and elimination tournament was held using the rapier and an off-hand weapon of the contestant’s choosing.
Congratulations to Curtis Rochelle, Champion of the 11th Annual Assault of Arms, defeating Ethan Waltz in the finals match.

The Grand Assault of Arms is an annual event presented by the Victorian Fencing Society to showcase their skills. It is based on the Grand Assaults of the nineteenth century, which were popular and celebrated events, where spectators flocked to see renowned swordsmen face off in public.
