08/06/2013

For the first time in program history, the Dakota Prairie Knights are your 2013 State Class "B" Babe Ruth Champions!

It took a three-run seventh-inning rally, punctuated by Gavin Tweed's infield single to third to plate the winning run, but the Knights prevailed, 4-3, to defeat a worthy Valley City club. Tweed's hit also made him a winner on the mound, as he pitched all seven innings for Dakota Prairie (24-4). Nate Rodriguez took the loss for Valley City (32-8-1).

Look for pictures from the championship soon from Central City Creative, and we'll see you next year in New Rockford!

Since losing their first game of the tournament to Beulah, Valley City has been on a roll. The District 6 champions blew open a close game with six runs in the top of the seventh to defeat Kindred, 13-6, and will meet Dakota Prairie for the state championship of Class 'B' Babe Ruth Baseball. It is the fourth straight victory for VC in the tournament.

The Knights (20-1) need just one win to capture the title, while Valley City (32-7-1) must defeat Dakota Prairie twice. The first championship will start at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, and a second championship game, if needed, will follow at 3:30 p.m.

The nightcap of the 2013 first round pitted Kindred against host team Carrington. A scoreless deadlock was broken in the third inning when the Vikings scored four runs, all with two outs, to take a 4-0 lead. The District 7 champs would add two more, while Carrington tallied a run late, but it was Kindred moving on with a 6-1 victory behind Matt Nathan's masterpiece on the mound. Nathan gave up five hits, and though he struck out just two, kept the local boys off balance with his breaking pitches and pinpoint control. Kindred will now face Beulah at 5:30 tomorrow evening, while Carrington faces elimination against Valley City at 12:30.
