Friends of the South Fork Kings River

On Saturday morning Sept 12 volunteers (2 from Michigan who were staying in the lodge and saw our flyer on the board outside the store , 6 from LA, 2 from Sacramento and 2 from Hanford and Clovis) met and cleaned 4 miles of Hiway 180 from Grizzly Falls to the park boundary (our 2nd AAH reach obligation), the 6 miles the park boundary to Roads End including Zumwalt Meadow and Roaring River areas, parts of Sheep Creek Campground.and around the lodge and day-use area. Many thanks to all of our volunteers and NPS employee (Brianna Plog) for their participation in collecting 20 lbs of trash and 5 lbs of recycleables!

Special thanks to our newest Board Member (Luis Miguel Moreno) for donating a second batch of “Friends of the South Fork Kings River” forest green tee shirts !!

Thanks also to the beautiful South Fork Kings River for providing such relaxing opportunities and for producing such beautiful wild rainbow and brown trout for us to be able to teach new anglers how to catch and release most of them. “Give a man a fish and he will eat for today. Teach a man to fish and he will eat forever!”

On Friday morning Sept.11, Rod and I collected 14 lbs of trash and 3 lbs of recyclables from the lower 10 miles of Highway 180 from Yucca Point to Grizzly Falls, one of our 2 Adopt A Highway monthly obligations. The largest item was part of a front bumper of a vehicle. Other items included glass b**r bottles, plastic water and soda bottles, aluminum b**r and soda cans, swim suits, shoes, towels, a big piece of cardboard, food wrappers and toilet paper!

Just returned home yesterday from our 4th and most successful cleanup so far this year and left the area with 72 less lbs of litter than we found it with ! Our record for this year so far ! But it was the hottest weather we’ve experienced so far this year and the river flow was the lowest so far too !

We’re getting ready to leave tomorrow for our Aug. visit , cleanups and wild trout monitoring ! Woo hoo!

Just now sharing some of the pics I took of another highly successful trip to the wild and scenic / wild trout stream in Kings Canyon!! I caught and released 9 wild brown and rainbow trout on my way out of the canyon on Sunday in 2 hrs, and we contributed 5 wild trout to the NPS Dragon Fly research study on Thursday.

One fly fisherman reported catching about 20 fish per day and the largest fish one of our volunteers (Chris Macias) caught was 16.5 in Wild Brown trout! I haven’t received the pic he took of that beauty yet…

Ok yeah, 5 volunteers and a new NPS staffer picked up a total of 26 lbs of trash and 3 lbs of recyclables over 5 days!

So far we have site 38 reserved in Sheep Creek campground arriving Thursday, July 9 and leaving Sunday July 12 with 1 trailer, 2 tents and 5 people.

Please let us know if you get a site too. We will need more spots to park vehicles and people, Thanks !ll
