Thoracic (upper back) extension is a range of motion that is often disregarded until its very difficult to get it back. Years of doing amazing things like holding your kids, educating yourself by reading or killing it at your career (often at a computer) as well as some not-so-awesome things like driving or slouching on a couch create that rounded upper back.
That rounded back didn’t happen over night, and it won’t be fixed over night.
But what is true is that if you don’t work on it, it will get worse and often cause other problems like low back pain, shoulder dysfunction and neck pain.
Mark has worked aggressively on this for the last two years. He has improved posture and reduced shoulder pain. He’s doing it through patience, effort and consistency. He tells me frequently how much better he feels at 65 than he did at 55,45 and even 35.
Great work, Mark!
