Flatbed Tents

Flatbed Tents Flatbed Tents has designed and built custom tents for the past 3 years. Our tents attach to flat bed trailers so you can get more use from what you already own.

Their use is only limited by your imagination. “I went to the motorcycle rally at Sturgis with a buddy in 2009. When we got to our campground there were about 2 dozen empty flatbeds parked in the parking lot. Later that week a huge hail storm came in and damaged lots of motorcycles. That’s when the idea of turning a flatbed trailer into a camper/garage hit me.” Gary S.

The best part of owning a Flatbed Tent is getting to use it, as this customer is doing in the mountains of Idaho. In today's world when we can buy just about everything already made, there is a certain satisfaction in using and enjoying things you had a hand in creating.

Once you receive your tent, installing it on the trailer is easy, typically taking 1-2 hours. Our instructions are pretty detailed and we are always available by phone to help if you need it. There is a lot of satisfaction in knowing that you've put this together yourself, especially when people come up and ask you about it. The only thing left is to put your tent to good use!

Once we're done with your tent we conduct a final quality insurance inspection and fix any discrepancies. It is then taken apart and packed into two packages for shipping along with instructions for installing the tent on your tralier. We will send you pictures and a final invoice so you can see the final result. Once we receive payment, the tent goes out via Fedex to your address.

We start the build of your tent by constructing a frame to your dimensions on our frame jig, using the fittings that we'll deliver to you. Once we get everything right, we then construct the tent body over the frame to make sure it fits to our standards. This process can take several times until we are satisfied with the way it fits. If we wouldn't be proud using it in public, we won't ship it.

Once we know exactly what you want we prepare a design document for your review. This shows the size and all the options as well as how we plan to address any unusual aspects to your build. This is accompanied by an initial invoice. Once you approve the build and we receive payment, the construction begins. This typically takes 4 weeks, although it can take longer during the busy season. Our goal is to get your tent to you as soon as we can so you can begin enjoying it.

There are a lot of factors that go into the design of your tent. The first is the type of weather that you want to be able to withstand. For mild weather use, windows will work perfectly well. If you plan to use your tent in places with lots of snowfall or high winds/ heavy rain, a frame with more cross pieces and a tent with no windows will work best. Another factor is how comfortable you feel with setting up the frame. A frame designed with more cross pieces will be easier to set up because the weight of each roof piece will be lighter. We will discuss these among other considerations before we begin to design your tent to make sure you get what you need without spending more than necessary.

The most important part of the pre-build is getting the precise dimensions of the trailer. We ask you to send us a drawing of your trailer deck with as much detail as possible to let us construct the tent to fit. This can be as simple as a hand drawn diagram with the key parts of the trailer labeled. We also ask for your option list, including types of doors, windows, awnings, etc. This feeds into designing the right tent for you.

The next step in ordering a tent is to provide a picture of your trailer. We ask for this so we can see the condition of the trailer and to look for anything that we will need to incorporate in the design. The first thing we look for are obstructions on the deck. These can be raised fenders, non-removable attachments or areas of the deck covered with metal flooring. Then we need to see the corners and edges of the tent deck so we can make sure to use the right attachments in our design. Finally we want to make sure we account for the railing when putting the plan together. We can fit a tent to almost any flat surface but we want to get it right the first time.

I recently shipped another tent and thought it would be good to share the process of ordering, building and shipping a tent. The process will be presented over the next two weeks from first contact to use of the tent. I take my clients' privacy very seriously but I have permission from them to use the photo you'll see.

The first step is to reach out to us through our website, by phone or through this account. I'll ask you to tell me how you plan to use the tent, the dimensions of your trailer and any particular needs you might have. This gets the process started to putting you in a tent that's right for you.
