Weightlifting Meets 101: Local Meet/ Weightlifting Etiquette

1. Arrive early but don't be a jerk.
➡️ When you get to the warmup room, there will be people warming up, don't just steal platforms and plates

2. COACHES DO NOT BURN CLOCKS
➡️ Or do any other fun rule you just learned you can take advantage of to throw lifters off. Unless there's cash on the line, save it for Nationals (A & B sessions)

3. Sharing is caring.
➡️ You will not have your own special warmup platform, bar, etc. Adapt, share, and be a decent human. You will be sharing with 1-3 other people at most meets.

4. The meet director ain't yo mama.
➡️ Clean up after yourself. All gyms have trash cans, use them.

Weightlifting Meets 101: Counting Attempts

1. Get to the back room about 30min in advance.

2. When counting, know if there is a 10min clock after intros or if they're skipping intros.

3. Take 1 attempt every 3 lifts on the platform or every 3minutes if no lifts have happened.

4. ASK FOR HELP. Most coaches at local meets will 100% help you count.

Weightlifting Meets 101: The Weigh-In

The Weigh-in is the first thing you'll do at the meet. Make sure you're ready to knock it out with ease.

1. Bring your USAW Card
➡️ You need this to compete.

2. Wear a singlet.
➡️ You get a 0.250 weight allowance and it's required.

3. Have your Openers in KILOGRAMS
➡️ There's a massive difference between a 135LBS sn**ch and 135KG Sn**ch.

4. Sign for your weight and openers.
➡️ This ensures you and the ref saw/heard the same thing.

5. Go eat and hydrate.
➡️ Fuel up and get ready to smash big weights!

Three Mistakes Beginner Lifters Make.

1. Focusing on weight over technique.

The goal isn't to lift the most weight TODAY. The goal is to build technique that lets you lift heavy for years. Technique-->Speed-->Load

2. Treating every session like a max out.

You can't improve if you're always testing. Practice making good lifts, not missing lifts.

3. Ignoring max strength and/or mobility.

Sn**ch and Clean & Jerk technique aren't all you need. If you're not strong enough or not mobile enough, there's only so far you can go.

3 Reasons EVERY Weightlifter NEEDS to compete.

1. It'll expose weaknesses and make you more than a "training hall hero"

2. It gives your training purpose. Having a goal drives success on and off the platform.

3. The Weightlifting community is AWESOME.

Compete early, compete often.

If you're looking to compete sooner rather than later- The Indy Open 2026 Registration link is in bio.
