Odissi dance in San Diego: soft as a prayer one moment, fierce as fire the next. 🔥

This piece is about a woman who knows her own strength. Odissi lets you be gentle and powerful in the same breath, and that's what I love teaching.

Which side of you would you dance: the prayer or the fire? 👇

Some lessons don’t come from a textbook. They come from watching your Guru’s hands, again and again, until one day your own hands move the same way without you even thinking. 🤍

That’s what Odissi has taught us. It’s more than steps and mudras. It’s a bond: patience from her side, devotion from ours, and a rhythm that gets passed from one heart to the next.

To every teacher who corrected a posture for the hundredth time and never gave up on us: thank you. Everything we perform on stage carries a little piece of you. 🙏

This is what Odissi looks like backstage, right before we step into the light. From my youngest student to my oldest, every one of us carries a 2,000-year-old tradition into San Diego.

Yes, it’s the same hallway, the same nerves, and the same giggles before the curtain. Then the music starts and everything changes. ✨

Every Odissi dancer starts in this stance. It’s called chowka. Square, low, steady. My student is learning it right now, and it’s harder than it looks.

I’m Nilanjana, an Odissi guru and performer, and I teach Odissi dance classes in San Diego, California. My Indian classical dance classes are open to beginners, children and adults. No experience needed. I’m also available as an invited guest teacher and performer for universities, professional schools, yoga festivals and cultural events. My work is about keeping the Odissi tradition alive: teaching the next generation, producing original shows, and documenting this art form so it lasts. If you’d like an Odissi workshop, lecture-demonstration or performance for your campus or event, I’d love to hear from you.

Odissi practice in San Diego: nobody tells you how much of dance is repeating one tiny step until it finally feels right 😅

Today was mirror, music and me being very picky about my footwork. It looks graceful, but this control takes years.

Dancers, how many times do you repeat one step before you're happy? 👇

Odissi dance: give me another life and I would still choose this art. 🖤

For me it's not only dance. Every mudra, every step is a small prayer.

Send this to the friend who'd choose their art again too.

Odissi classical dance in San Diego. 🪷

I'm Nilanjana, and I teach Odissi, one of India's oldest classical dances, born in the temples of Odisha. It's known for its curved poses, expressive hands and storytelling.

Watch how her hands speak a language without saying a word.

Did you know that Indian classical dance uses a complex language of hand gestures called Mudras? ✋✨
In this snippet of Odissi, watch how the transition from one movement to the next effortlessly conveys emotion and narrative. It takes years of discipline to make something so complex look so effortless!
What emotion did this performance make you feel? Let me know in the comments!

Odissi Dance Love Story From Stage to Beach to San Diego

This video is my love letter to Odissi.

The lyric says - Only fools fall in love with dance, you can say that I’m a fool, and I don’t know very much but I think they call this love. That is exactly how I feel about Odissi.

From performing on stage in a blue and red Odissi costume, to dancing on the beach in California, to dancing in nature near a waterfall - dance has been my home everywhere.

I am an Odissi artist, teacher, institution builder based in San Diego, CA. Through RDM Studio I am building an institution that will live beyond my performing career, teaching kids and adults authentic Odissi in San Diego and online worldwide.
