Nice piece on our old friend Skee

Born in 1914 in New Bloomfield, PA, and raised in Upper Darby, Skee Riegel didn’t even pick up a golf club until he was 23! Before that, he was a standout athlete in football and baseball at West Point, Hobart College, and Lafayette College. During WWII, he served as a flying instructor for the U.S. Army Air Corps in Arkansas. 🇺🇸✈️

Despite starting golf later in life, Skee made a big impact. He won the 1947 U.S. Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach and played on the U.S. Walker Cup teams in 1947 and 1949, going undefeated in all four matches! 🙌

He turned pro in 1950 and went on to play in 11 consecutive Masters Tournaments from 1947 to 1957. In the 1951 Masters, he tied with Sam Snead after three rounds and finished just two strokes behind the great Ben Hogan. He also placed second at the 1952 Insurance City Open.

After stepping away from full-time competition in 1953, Skee became head pro at Radnor Valley Country Club and later co-owned York Road Country Club. He eventually settled into the role of pro emeritus at Cape May National Golf Club in New Jersey, where he was often seen walking the course with his beloved poodle, John Paul. 🐾

Cape May National still honors his legacy with plaques on the 18th tee and articles throughout the clubhouse.

A true icon of the game, and a reminder that it’s never too late to chase greatness. 💪⛳️
