Nobody said they’d all be easy, and that certainly wasn’t the case last night.
Down four runs going into the sixth inning, with one of our worst-looking offensive performances of the season so far, we fought tooth and nail and managed to scrape by Dirty Dozen for a 9-7 win to remain undefeated.
Sometimes the ball doesn’t bounce your way, and whether it was a tough groundout or a hard-hit flyout, we weren’t getting what we wanted offensively early.
But with three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, as well as a late-game defensive masterpiece, we pulled off the huge comeback to keep our unbeaten streak alive.
We always say that we play for Nick, and you could feel it late as we had a chip on our shoulder in those final few innings.
In need of a spark in the sixth, Zach Uhrhan used his wheels to beat out the throw for an infield single, bringing around two runs and giving us life before the seventh.
Down a run in the seventh, Landon Watkins tied us up with an infield single of his own, and Logan Bruns got us ahead with a double to center as we rallied all the way back to grab the lead late.
Led by another excellent performance from Dillon Donley, “The Don” held the Dozen without a baserunner for the final three innings as our defense made a huge step forward to get the final nine outs.
Outside of a great rally from the Dozen early, scoring five in the second, we held the opponents to just two runs over six innings as we had one of our greatest all-around defensive performances so far.
Big props to Bruns, who had a huge reach at first base to get an early out and set the tone defensively.
Our effort out there definitely helped shape how the game unraveled, and there was plenty of that to go around.
Our goal was to stay undefeated through May, and we accomplished that. We’re 3-0 going into the month of June, with a big game against West Park Lanes on the docket on Monday night.
Our biggest game of the year, we’ll have to lock in for another battle, but we won’t back down from the challenge.
Let’s keep it going in June.
