Nobody said they’d all be easy, and that certainly wasn’t the case last night.

Down four runs going into the sixth inning, with one of our worst-looking offensive performances of the season so far, we fought tooth and nail and managed to scrape by Dirty Dozen for a 9-7 win to remain undefeated.

Sometimes the ball doesn’t bounce your way, and whether it was a tough groundout or a hard-hit flyout, we weren’t getting what we wanted offensively early.

But with three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, as well as a late-game defensive masterpiece, we pulled off the huge comeback to keep our unbeaten streak alive.

We always say that we play for Nick, and you could feel it late as we had a chip on our shoulder in those final few innings.

In need of a spark in the sixth, Zach Uhrhan used his wheels to beat out the throw for an infield single, bringing around two runs and giving us life before the seventh.

Down a run in the seventh, Landon Watkins tied us up with an infield single of his own, and Logan Bruns got us ahead with a double to center as we rallied all the way back to grab the lead late.

Led by another excellent performance from Dillon Donley, “The Don” held the Dozen without a baserunner for the final three innings as our defense made a huge step forward to get the final nine outs.

Outside of a great rally from the Dozen early, scoring five in the second, we held the opponents to just two runs over six innings as we had one of our greatest all-around defensive performances so far.

Big props to Bruns, who had a huge reach at first base to get an early out and set the tone defensively.

Our effort out there definitely helped shape how the game unraveled, and there was plenty of that to go around.

Our goal was to stay undefeated through May, and we accomplished that. We’re 3-0 going into the month of June, with a big game against West Park Lanes on the docket on Monday night.

Our biggest game of the year, we’ll have to lock in for another battle, but we won’t back down from the challenge.

Let’s keep it going in June.

We’re firmly rooted at second in the league, and we’ve got a chance to keep climbing with a shot at going 3-0 tonight.

Let’s keep it rolling. See you tonight Cobra nation!

Make that a 2-0 start for your Ford Groves Cobras!

Last night, against a pretty tough Cape Glass & Tinting squad, we got tested at some points but still came away with a 21-10 winner.

But even with our youth, we’ve got a hard-nosed offense that’s ready to put the work in and create runs, and we definitely did that as we put 21 across, an average of 3 an inning.

First baseman Logan Bruns not only got his first hit of the year — he got four of them, going a perfect 4-for-4 with a solo homer in the fifth for a game-high seven total bases.

Ryan Calder kept his ridiculous start to the season alive with a 4-for-5 day at the plate, bagging four singles. He’s now batting .889 on the young season.

Our ace pitcher, Dillon “The Don” Donley, got singled out mid-game for a supposed illegal pitching motion, and practically had to completely relearn how to send the ball in.

Regardless of this, he bounced back, created outs, and even put away a couple of tough outs along the way to give us the big winning result to keep our record perfect!

Holden Miller and Landon Watkins each had great games at the plate too, with both going 4-for-5 with a couple of extra-base hits while Miller got our first official three-bagger of the season with his two-RBI triple in the second.

We’ve got a week to rest in preparation for a big showdown with Dirty Dozen (1-3) next Thursday night, May 30, at 6:30 p.m. in a battle of two of the league’s youngest teams.

We’ll get after it in the midweek and hope to go 3-0 heading into the month of June!

Chalk one up for Team Nick!

Against one of the top teams in the league, the first game in franchise history doubled as the first win in franchise history as the Ford Groves Cobras got a big 15-8 win over Bad News Bears.

Led by the four hits, five RBIs and eight total bases of Blake Saupe, including our first-ever longball with a three-run shot in the fifth, we got it done in Game 1 against a tough opponent.

Dillon Donley pitched a gem in the circle, holding a top offense to just six earned runs and producing a whole lot of favorable contact as our infield, led by Landon Watkins at third, dominated.

Ryan Calder went 4-for-4 as well, with three singles and a double, while Braiden Wagganer got three infield singles and a walk to heat the offense up as leadoff.

Down a run heading into the fifth, with two on, Watkins got a huge double down the line in left that he stretched into three on a throw, scoring two to put us in front for good.

Huge props to Bad News Bears for a great game with a fun atmosphere. Even in those high-intensity moments, there was always a respect for each other, and that’s awesome to have.

We’re 1-0 on the year after finally getting a full game in, and it feels phenomenal after an extended offseason of anticipation.

We’re scheduled next for a 6:30 p.m. Thursday first pitch at Shawnee against Cape Glass & Tinting (0-4), looking to go 2-0 despite an unforgiving forecast.

Fourth time’s the charm. Beautiful night for softball in Cape Girardeau as the Ford Groves Cobras are set to open up the season!

We’ve got a marquee matchup with Bad News Bears, a team tied for the most wins in the league so far at 2-1.

We’ll plan on a 9 p.m. first pitch on Shawnee Park Sports Complex’s Field 2.

05/17/2024

In a shocking turn of events, coming as a total surprise to all parties involved, tonight’s games have been postponed.

Leading 4-0 against one of the top teams in Division III, the Cobras staked a huge lead early in the first, but Mother Nature had other plans.

The game won’t be resumed, but postponed and restarted. Not ideal, but we take it as it comes.

One day, we will play a full softball game. One day.
