Today marked the final practice of our Summer Open Mats, and I could not be more proud of what our kids accomplished. From our youth wrestlers to the high school boys and girls who showed up to help, the commitment, effort, and energy were outstanding all summer long.
This year we expanded our opportunities — adding a second weekly practice for all kids, and on Tuesday nights the high school team offered a girls‑only open mat. We also tested a brand‑new practice attendance tracking system, and across three practices a week we recorded 300 total check‑ins. That is an incredible number, and every one of those kids should be proud of the work they put in.
A huge thank you to Braden Sehr for running practices all summer. The kids love his ability to keep things fun while still pushing them to work hard and improve.
Thank you as well to Cael Vander Broek, Parker Sehr, and Gavyn Ockenga for consistently helping Braden and supporting our youth wrestlers. I apologize for kids I have missed.
Another big thank you to Coach Groenke and Coach Bartels for leading our girls‑only open mat. Participation was strong — especially for the first summer offering it and with softball season overlapping.
Thank you to Lakynn Qualseth, Brooke Warejcka, Elaina Myburgh, CharleeAnn Winter, and Charlie Karel for showing up week after week to help. These practices — with high school boys and girls stepping up as leaders — are the moments our younger wrestlers will remember for years.
To all our C‑Hawks: amazing job this summer. Your effort, your attendance, and your willingness to learn made this program stronger.
Thanks to the Dairy Queen of Canton donating gift cards for our wrestler of the day!!
Lastly Thanks to Canton Wrestling Club Board for paying the summer coaching and investing in the youth and the future of the C-Hawks.
Good luck to everyone in your fall sports — keep working hard, keep supporting each other, and keep representing Canton with pride.
