Southeast Region 9-Ball World Qualifier finals pitted two Division 595 rivals against each other, and it was a battle to the end with each made or missed ball creating an environment that only the Southeast Region can understand and revel in. There is a reason why this Division has sent more teams to the World Championships than any other Division in all of Metro Detroit APA and that reason is because they play with this intensity every Thursday night. In other words, this is just another week of pool for them! Annette Guibord started off for the Motor City Outlaws with a 16-4 win. Amy Dudzinski, hit a gear we knew she had in her and put together one of her best matches winning 19-1 to put Lucky Shots ahead 23-17. Shelby Cadle backed that up with a 14-6 win extending the Lucky Shot lead to 37-23. With the match slipping away, Joe Roberts squeaked out a 12-8 victory to keep his team in it. In the sudden death, fifth match and needing 28 points to win the Championship, Ernesto Cordova won the second rack giving him 26 points and all he had to do is make one ball on the break to clinch it for his team and that he did!

Northeast Region 9-Ball World Qualifier had five teams from the Wednesday Hall of Fame Division in it, so you knew that there were going to be tough battles since everybody was familiar with each other already. In a second-round matchup between Crazy Eights & Power Stroke, it was Maddie Straetmans (SL2), in a sudden death, fifth match who pocketed her last couple balls to send Power Stroke over to the other side of the bracket. Two matches later and it was the same two teams in the finals! This time Captain Rob Debro was looking for different results. Starting off with Ken Martin & Brent Rogers this time around, gave the team a 28-12 lead after the first two matches. Crazy Eights had no other choice but put their SL9 (Bobby Rezin) up to get some points back and instead of the same matchup from the last time, they countered with SL3 (Patricia Henry) and although Bobby still won, Pat was able to get eight crucial points for her team. She played tough and didn’t back down for a second and it truly inspired the rest of team! Rob clinched the Championship and the trip to Vegas in the fourth match using that inspiration and now he is looking to Captain his first team in Vegas, after already being on other teams, twice before as a player. I suspect he is looking for different results out there as well!

The Diamond Dogs started this tournament with a convincing win in the first round and then ran into Division 592 rival, We Be Waitin, where they soon found themselves on the other side of the bracket. For most teams, that may have been the end. However, when you have a Captain who has led three different teams to the World Championships (21, 24, 25), this was just the way it goes sometimes and as long as you have another match to play, he knows there’s still a chance! They took that opportunity and won their next three matches including one against the Diamond Club winners – OutKast, to get to the finals, where they met up with Stewey’s Crew. Grant McElwain led the team off with a 17-3 win and three matches later Jen McEvoy finished it off with a 16-4 win to give the Diamond Dogs the 2026 Northwest Region 9-Ball World Qualifier Championship and the trip to Vegas!

This team is much different than any Leone team we’ve seen in the past, so what will we see from Coach Carl this time around? Perhaps he can harness this new energy and turn it into a Championship run at Nationals, or will he have to empty out his bail fund? Either way, this should be fun to watch and follow!

In the Southwest Region 9-Ball World Qualifier Finals, we had two undefeated teams with Bump & Run, coming off a runner-up finish in the 8-Ball World Qualifier last week, and Shhhh! Bill Osborne and Angela Ivey staked Bump & Run to a 26-14 lead after two matches, but in APA fashion, you are never out of a match until the last ball is sunk. Ron Brusseau & Toni Johnson took the next two matches to give Shhhh! a 42-38 lead with the fifth and final match deciding the victor. With teams in Sudden Death, where every ball made was worth double and the trip to Vegas on the line, Stephanie Brusseau showed up in complete beast mode and there was no need for a Shhhh! …. as she delivered a clutch performance for her team!

As always, the Brusseau’s take it upon themselves to have clever team names that have deeper meaning than what you see on paper. It’s part of the fun and the shirts they come up with are ever so creative, to say the least. For those that know where/how this team name originated, you are in on one of the classic stories of our League. We find it interesting that this team name has been in existence for two years now and I don’t want to be that guy and say “I told you so” …. but here we are! 😉

If you’re old enough to remember the Hagler vs Hearns fight, you would have appreciated this finals match. In the first match, Rashel Noe started out by putting the Mystery Chickens ahead 2-0. Bump & Runs Jack West countered to tie it 2-2, in the second match. In the third match, Matt Fritz put his team back ahead 5-2 and in typical William Osborne fashion, literally dancing and singing his way around the table, floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee, tying the match back up 5-5.

In the final winner take all match, it was Leo Favaro (SL5) vs Zena Arnett (SL3), with Leo needing four games and Zena needing two. You knew this was going to be a shoot-out since both of these players don’t play very many defensive shots. It was the gunslinger Leo who got out to a 3-0 lead and with only one game left to clinch it, Zena took the fourth game to force the hill-hill game. With each ball being made the anxiety on the sideline kept increasing. With both players down to the 8-Ball, Leo left himself in a tough position on the 8-Ball and his only option was a bank in the side pocket. Without any hesitation, he marked his pocket and fired it in, delivering the knockout!

After three matches and leading 6-2, it looked like On The Snap was heading for Vegas for a second year in a row. However, Jeff Ciuzicki (The Nail) had other plans as he got three points in the fourth match to tighten the score making it 6-5.

It was sudden death time, and it all came down to one rack; worth two points and both teams fate was in the hands of a SL4 vs SL3! After all the timeouts were used up, it was left to the players to figure it out. All the stripes and solids were off the table. Each player had difficult shots on the eight, and with the intensity and pressure increasing from the oohs and aahs from the sideline, Jessica Reske (SL4) made a table length shot on the eight ball and the thrill of victory went to The Nail …. The prime example of how you can never count yourself out of a match!

Note: The sportsmanship from On The Snap was an example of how to lose with dignity, respect, and appreciation of what a great match they just played in. We appreciate it.

Here is everything you need to know about the Regulators. When it was all over, I went to the player who clinched the set for them to win the trip to congratulate her on how tough she played that last sudden death game. I also made the comment that a certain player on her team owes her a shot for pulling it off and without hesitation, she said "That’s what we do, we pick each other up" …. and that folks is how you win World Qualifiers! No excuses, no pointing fingers, no sulking, just a next up mentality.

The Regulators went undefeated with 8-4, 9-5, 7-5, 8-3, 7-3 victories and although the finals may have looked like their easiest win, it was anything but that. Up 4-1 against a veteran team (Pool Runnings) and in the third match, you could sense the pressure mounting as Camiel Carnahan made it hill-hill by making the 8-Ball on the break and then playing a tough defensive game to win the match and make it 5-3. In sudden death with the one game worth two points, Megan Sauve (SL3) was in a tough spot with her opponent needing to make just one ball and the 8-Ball, with several of her solids still on the table. Six innings later, she pockets the 8-Ball, and her team is going to Vegas!

It’s no secret at this point, if you’re going to represent the Southeast Region in the World Pool Championships in Vegas, you have to go through Out Of Control. Stacy Wiggins teams have proven that they can play some 8-ball and the way they play this game is something teams should be watching and learning from. Having Fun (Ed Smyth Jr) delivered a first round 7-6 blow, but then they went on to win the next four matches in convincing manner. We can guarantee that their 7-days in Vegas will be focused on bringing home some hardware for Metro Detroit APA!
