Stack and crack.

The idea with multiple attackers is NOT to fight everyone at once.

Instead, you want to limit the number of attackers who can reach you at once.

Multiple attacker situations are typically thought of as you being surrounded.

But you can be pinned as well. in a corner, against your car, or as in this case, against a wall.

Stack refers to lining the attackers up so one becomes an obstacle for the others.

Crack refers to moving between two attackers to escape being trapped.

Stack is always preferable, and that's what we're working in this video.

The difference between social and asocial violence?

Social violence can always be avoided with the proper deescalation skills.

You've just gotta be willing to use them and not get drawn into the ego match.

Don't just know when not to fight. Know HOW not to fight.

There are lots of cool knockout punches on YouTube.

And since the dawn of advertising, everyone wants to sell you the magic punch, the magic system.

One touch knockouts, end a fight in 5 seconds, yada yada yada.

But the knockout isn't as important is its made out to be.

Why not? What do you really need?

Pause reflex.

Find out more about it in this back issue of our newsletter.

Arm punches just don't cut it. Especially when you're trapped underneath someone on the ground.

What would have made his punches more effective?

What's the immediate threat?

A rope around the neck is bad. at the same time, if you understand the immediate threat, the solution isn't so hard.

in this case, the airway being cut off is the immediate threat. But so is being pulled off balance.

Both threats are handled with one motion – getting the body turned.

By stepping back and turning, you prevent the pull off balance or to the ground.

And at the same time, you allow the rope to slip onto the back of your neck instead of the front.

Plus, the attacker is in your striking range.

I thought she handled this brilliantly - what do you think?

Had her doors locked.

Didn't get out.

Didn't scream, yell, threaten.

Kept things light, you could "hear" her smiling.

Agreed, even when it was absurd.

Used physical gestures like thumbs up to ease the tension.

As opposed to most who would have laid on the horn, screamed "get the f**k out of my way!" or used the "other" hand gesture.

Job well done.

Can you really screw up calling 911? Check this out...

I had a student several years ago. She told me about her husband falling off a ladder while doing some house repair.

She rushed to grab her cell phone and called 911.

Except she didn't. She couldn't get her fingers to work.

She tried again. And again.

After several attempts, she was finally successful.

In the meantime, every failed attempt induced more panic until she managed to slow herself down to what felt like a laborious pace.

Just to dial three numbers.

So all those things you tell yourself, "Well, if I was attacked, I'd just (insert reaction here)" like it's nothing...

Without ever training it...

Evidence says otherwise.

Oops, just kidding...

Ideally you see the signs of a concealed draw early. That gives you chance to either avoid or stop the draw.

But if the weapon clears the pocket or belt line?

You don't get to go "oh, my bad" and go on your merry way.

You just escalated. Treat it like any other weapon disarm. Create damage where possible, get the weapon if needed.

Most importantly, get out of there as soon as you can safely leave.

I want to...

Learn self defense.
Be more aware.
Have more confidence.
Get in better shape.
Not be scared to go out alone.

The definition of insanity is doing the same actions repeatedly, but expecting different results.

What will you do today to head in the new direction you want to go?

Digging a little deeper...

On Monday I posted a video about filling in the "gaps" of root, or skeleton, techniques.

Here's a little deeper look at some more options.

It's not alway about what you want to do as a technique, but rather what's presented to you.

09/19/2022

Skeleton's aren't just for the closet.

We have 8 root techniques that establish the foundational movements of everything we do.

Footwork, angles, distance, basic strikes, basic ground movements.

But they're only skeleton techniques. For best application, there are gaps to fill in.

Root 3 is a straight kick defense. Pivot out of the way, take the head space, kick the knee.

But what else can you do? What other motions fill in the gaps left by the skeleton technique?
