📖 Everybody open up your textbooks because it's time for a jiujitsu history lesson! 📖

Last week, we talked about Kodokan Judo and the formal origins of Brazilian Jiujitsu. This week, we are talking about jujitsu and no that’s not a typo. Jujitsu is the Japanese martial art of defensive or offensive close combat.

Unlike modern jiujitsu, jujitsu includes striking, gouging, biting and all forms of throws and pins. This is primarily because it was developed as a method of close combat when Samurai were unable to draw their swords or became engaged in close quarters combat.

The earliest recorded instances of formalized jujitsu occurred in the Nara period of Japan anywhere from 710 AD - 794 AD. Unlike neighboring nations that focused on primarily striking based forms of martial arts, Japanese martial arts largely took the form of grappling via throws and immobilization.

In the Edo period of the 17th century, Japan imposed legislation to reduce war and minimize the idolization of violence. The transition of armor and weapons to decorative items also led to the evolution of jujitsu. Jujitsu largely became an unarmed discipline and striking became a means of distraction to open opportunities for joint locks or strangulations.

All of us at 719 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu truly believe we have some of the best students and community around!

For this week, we're highlighting one of our adult athletes Grace Wilson!

From Coach Lexi: Grace is one of the most hard working and dedicated grapplers we have here at 719! She shows up, works hard and is the safest training partner. I am happy and proud to be able to coach her!

💪🏻 Favorite Submission: Collar chokes and rear naked chokes.

🥋 Why did you start training?
I started to learn self defense. Also, to appreciate my son Luke's journey in Jiu Jitsu to have a great thing to relate to him with, and do with him.

🔹What advice would you give to someone who’s interested in trying BJJ?
I'd say, really try it, and do it for a long while! Check your ego at the door, and you will learn more than great Jiu Jitsu, you will build character, endurance, and be with great people!

🔹What do you like most about being at 719?
That all the coaches and training partners here build the best Jiu Jitsu community of support. With that in effect, I learned things I could do with my body that really surprised me! I enjoy that so much!

Lots of fun this past week at Jiujitsu Con!

Congratulations to our competitors! Lexi killed it and placed 5th out of 14 athletes. All this, less than 6 months after getting her blue belt 💪

Titus placed 3rd in gi. 3rd in absolute no-gi and 2nd in no-gi!

Jason and Sadie from Tabs also killed it! Jason placing 1st in no-gi and Sadie placed 3rd in Gi and 3rd in no-gi!

This week at 719!

All Valley Brazilian Jiujitsu Championship is happening at Soccer Haus on Saturday, September 12th! Even if you’re not competing, please come out and show your support for our athletes! There is a restaurant in the venue that provides a great view of the action.

We also got official word that we are able to do satellite weigh-ins for our competitors - time will be announced later this week.

📖 Everybody open up your textbooks because it's time for a jiujitsu history lesson! 📖

This week, we're continuing reviewing the history of our sport and it's origins with Kodokan Judo!

Kodokan Judo is a school of Judo that was originally started in 1882 by Kanō Jigorō, the founder of Judo.

Kodokan can be translated as "a place for the study of the way" from the components kō "to lecture", dō "way" and kan "public building". Judo can also be translated as "the gentle way"

This is all very fitting because Kōdōkan is also the name of the official headquarters of the worldwide Judo community located in Tokyo, Japan.

Tune in again next week for a deep dive into the history of jujutsu and the earliest recorded origins of modern day Brazilian Jiujitsu.

⭐️Student Spotlight⭐️

All of us at 719 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu truly believe we have some of the best students and community around!

For this week, we're highlighting one of our youth athletes Linkyn Tafoya!

From Coach Josh: Linkyn is one of our older students in our second class and he's a shining example of being a good training partner. Despite being taller and bigger than most kids in class, he's always willing to train and assist younger students in their learning.

💪🏻 Favorite Submission: the Rear Naked Choke

🥋 Why did you start training? Ever since I was a kid, I was tough on my brother and wanted to do something to get that energy out. Five years ago, I tried wrestling for a year and I didn't feel like it was for me. But two years ago, I found 719. The first day was really fun! The first submission I learned was the triangle and ever since then I've had a ton of fun.

🔹What advice would you give to someone who’s interested in trying BJJ? Remember that it's only okay to use Jiu-Jitsu outside of the school in self defense. It's not okay to do jiujitsu on someone unless they're trying to hurt you.

🔹What do you like most about being at 719? I get to learn cool techniques to prepare myself for the outside world.

🛑 Announcements 🛑

This week at 719!

Coach Tom will be taking a much needed break. Coach Josh will be stepping in to cover classes! Women's class on Wednesday will also be cancelled.

Also, everyone make sure to wish our competitors good luck! Jiujitsu Con 2026 will be going on and several of our athletes will be heading down to test themselves against the best.
