For years, the conversation around wolves has focused almost entirely on their impact on deer and elk. But there’s another side to the story that’s gaining attention among hunters and outfitters across North America.

Wolves are killing bears. The bottom photo shows a wolf carrying a dead black bear cub captured by Craig Kavajecz.

From firsthand encounters at bait sites to increasing reports of bears being pulled from dens, the evidence is becoming harder to ignore. As deer numbers decline and wolf populations grow, predation pressure appears to be shifting toward black bears, especially cubs and younger animals.

Scientific studies confirm this behavior exists, but no research has fully measured its impact on bear populations. Meanwhile, those in the field are seeing it unfold year after year.

This raises an important question about balance. Are current wildlife management strategies accounting for the full scope of predator interactions?
