ORIGIN STORY
Most people around WNC know that the Enka High School athletics teams have two different names. The boys are the Jets, the girls are the Sugar Jets. However, I learned today that “Sugar” is not just a cute way to say “Lady”!

In the 1956-57 season a man named Zeb Lee would broadcast high school basketball games on the radio, the only person doing it at the time. During that era, there was a popular cereal called Sugar Jets. While broadcasting an Enka game Lee described the girls as playing “as fine as Sugar Jets”. The name stuck!

Through the years the Sugar Jet moniker has become a point of pride for Enkas gals, even surviving attempts from outsiders to get the school to change the name because of perceived misogyny.
