We have just trained three new instructors to teach our “Partnering with Poise: Care for the Care Partner” workshop.

We are looking for some friends in Asheville who might be interested in volunteering to attend our workshop sessions so that these new instructors can have the opportunity to practice teaching this curriculum. You do not need to currently be a care partner to attend.

Our new instructors are from Montana, Vermont, and Eastern North Carolina. After they finish their training week here in Asheville, they will go home and begin teaching these workshops to care partners in their local communities. Monika Gross, the Executive Director of The Poise Project, is the training instructor, and she will be supervising both workshop sessions.

"Partnering with Poise: Care for the Care Partner” is an evidence-based program originally developed by The Poise Project with funding from the Parkinson's Foundation and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. Our workshop is adapted from Alexander technique, which is a well-established training in the performing arts to help manage stressful situations, prevent strain or injury, and improve overall functioning in daily life.

You will learn some practical skills that can help reduce stress and prevent physical strain, and feel refreshed at any time of day, without adding any extra time or tasks to your day.

DeWayne Barton is an activist and generational resident and land owner in my town of Asheville NC. He gets things done! If you are interested in supporting a significant urban project that is carefully designed to repair decades of "urban planning" harm done in Affrilachia to generations of Black residents in the Asheville area, I strongly encourage you to support the Blue Note Junction project. The Poise Project supports this project and will offer future support for the proposed health space that would be a place where Alexander technique and other health-positive modalities could be shared with the community.

Announcing a free online symposium, open to all interested in Alexander technique as an intervention, entitled “Current Scientific Research and Models for the Alexander Technique” on May 18th at 12 noon Eastern time.

This is an opportunity to view how AT is making its way forward and reaching more people through our better understanding of how contemporary science supports and clarifies this transformative work. Consistency in language and a grounding in contemporary, peer-reviewed scientific aspects of the AT principles is really essential for us to advance and enter the mainstream of the general public, removing barriers to access for broader socioeconomic groups in the 21st Century.

Dr. Tim Cacciatore, Assoc. Prof. Rajal Cohen, Prof. Ian Loram and Dr. Patrick Johnson will present an overview of what current science has to offer the Alexander Technique. This 2.5 hour in-depth symposium addresses the urgent need for updating our scientific understanding of our work. It also aims to help AT teachers to better communicate with scientists, medical professionals, and AT colleagues.
