New York Budget Adds 'Convertible Pistol' Ban, Targeting G***k-Style Handguns
New York's budget bill passed May 21 banning any pistol with a cruciform trigger bar — a design element in virtually all G***k-style handguns sold in the state.
The New York Senate and Assembly passed the state's public protection and general government budget bill on May 21 with a provision creating a new category of prohibited handgun called a "convertible pistol" — defined as any semi-automatic pistol with a cruciform trigger bar that can be altered by hand or with common household tools to accept a machine gun conversion device. NRA-ILA reported the measure passed on a near-party-line vote with all Republicans in opposition and is expected to receive Governor Hochul's signature within days.

The practical reach of the new category is broad. A cruciform trigger bar — a cross-shaped component linking the trigger to the firing mechanism — is a standard design element in virtually all G***k-pattern and G***k-compatible striker-fired pistols, a segment that accounts for a substantial share of handguns sold in New York each year. Under the law as written, a pistol qualifies as a convertible pistol based on trigger bar geometry alone; the owner need not possess a conversion device or have any intent to modify the firearm. Any common G***k-style pistol currently on a New York dealer's shelf would meet the definition as written.

The same budget package requires manufacturers of three-dimensional printers sold in New York to equip those devices with blocking software capable of detecting and preventing the production of fi****ms components, including conversion devices. A working group would be established to set minimum technical standards for the detection algorithms. NRA-ILA described the combined provisions as a "budget ambush," arguing that a prohibition of this scope on commonly owned handguns should have gone through committee hearings and regular floor debate rather than being folded into a spending bill.

Similar legislation is advancing in other states. Illinois's House Gun Violence Prevention Committee passed HB4471 on May 20, targeting what the bill calls "machine gun convertible pistols" with language critics say is broad enough to encompass standard G***k-style handguns. Connecticut passed an analogous measure in April, and California signed a comparable law in October 2025, making New York one of four states now moving against this class of firearm through the same cruciform trigger bar definition. Second Amendment groups including the National Shooting Sports Foundation and Fi****ms Policy Coalition have described the emerging multi-state pattern as a coordinated legislative push to reclassify commonly owned pistols without litigating their constitutionality directly.

Governor Hochul proposed the convertible pistol language as part of her fiscal year 2027 executive budget priorities. The ban on new sales takes effect 30 days after the governor's signature. Dealers and distributors in New York will need to assess inventory quickly. Legal challenges are expected but had not been filed as of publication.

Kathy Hochul is holding press conferences bragging about growing support for her gun control agenda here in Albany -- exactly what we’ve been warning about for weeks now.
This is Hochul’s standard playbook.
Hold press conferences. Get the media involved. Work behind the scenes to whip votes for a coordinated package of gun control bills. This is happening right now.
And as we’ve been warning you, once they believe they have the votes locked in, these bills can move very fast. That’s exactly where we are right now.
Here in Albany, Kathy Hochul’s gun control agenda is no longer centered on just one bill.
It is a coordinated package designed to layer restriction upon restriction until lawful gun ownership becomes nearly impossible for gun owners who live here in New York State.
Several major gun control bills are active and eligible to move between now and adjournment:
👉 S. 399 -- banning the sale of G***k handguns in New York State just because criminals use them
👉 S. 362 -- forcing us to wait 10 days to buy any firearm in New York State which puts innocent people in danger
👉 A. 360 -- mandating a mental health exam just to purchase a firearm, which is designed to end gun rights
👉 S. 4277 -- banning .50 caliber rifles and laying the groundwork to expand bans to other hunting calibers
👉 S. 5974 -- forcing gun owners to purchase $1,000,000 in civil liability insurance simply to own a firearm
This is not random legislation; this is a plan for step-by-step disarmament.
One bill delays your purchase.
Another mandates psychological screening.
Another forces registration and bans specific fi****ms.
Another requires insurance to own a gun.
Step by step, year by year, Albany Democrats try to tighten control over who can own fi****ms and under what conditions.
Governor Hochul despises an armed population. She pushes confiscation and registration bills constantly -- anything she can do to disarm us one step at a time.
And right now, Hochul and her allies are working behind the scenes to whip votes in support of this gun control package.
That’s how Albany operates.
Votes are counted in private. Pressure is applied inside caucus meetings. Leadership makes sure the numbers are there before anything ever reaches the Senate floor. Once they believe they have the votes locked in, legislation can move very quickly.
That is why sustained pressure right now is critical
