Douglas “Doc” Ryder was, without question, one of the most dedicated people our program has ever known. For the past eight years, he coached our Major Yankees team, giving his time selflessly out of a genuine love for the game and a deep dedication to the youth of our community. Not only was he a coach at CJB&S, but he was also an integral part of the Baker football program, impacting young athletes both on the baseball diamond and the football field.
Those who spent a great deal of time at CJB&S could see that Doc wasn't quite himself this past year. Following our championship games in June, after all the families had left and the fields had grown quiet, Doc was found sitting alone at a picnic table. When he was approached and jokingly asked if he was lost, he responded with his signature laugh, tears in his eyes, and said he was simply taking a moment to reminisce about all the years he had spent at the field. He reflected on how quickly time passes and shared that life moves too fast to take any moment for granted.
As he spoke about some of the memories that meant the most to him, Doc was reminded that his impact on our baseball community had been felt by everyone who was fortunate enough to know him.
The joy he found in the kids was immeasurable. The pride he felt after every victory, the encouragement he offered after every mistake, and the wisdom he shared after every loss will never be forgotten. While his presence at the field will be deeply missed, his legacy will live on in the countless players, coaches, and families whose lives he touched.
Doc was more than a coach. He was a mentor, a friend, and a cherished part of our baseball family. We will forever be grateful for his dedication, his kindness, and the example he set for all of us. May we all take a page from Doc's book and remember to slow down and "take it all in" every now and then.
