1. Leaving too many reps in the tank. This is common for most of us gym goers to not push as hard as we should. Every set should be challenging. Ideally having 1-3 reps in the tank (with good technique) is ideal to strive for regardless of the amount of reps you do per set. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

2. Poor individualized exercise selection. Not every exercise works well for every body. Find which are most effective at achieving the results you want (speed, power, aesthetic, etc).

3. Not going full range of motion. I understand it’s challenging to work on full ROM. It is also a gut check because often times the amount of weight we lift will be less. However you will facilitate much more muscle growth and joint health working full ROM as opposed to partial range.

1. Have a plan and track that plan. Yes it’s annoying, tedious, time consuming, etc. but it is important nonetheless to have a plan but also track everything along the way. At the very least you’ll learn a lot along the way not only in the aspect of how you respond to things but what you can do moving forward on your next goal.

2. Know when to back off or throttle. Pay attention to your body. Know when it’s time to back off. For example if you’re on a weight loss plan but your sleep and performance is suffering, having a hard time with hunger (severe ravenous hunger that is outside the norm of being a little hungry) or having far too much psychological stress. If lifting it would look like not recovering, chronic fatigue, numbers are tanking, etc.

3. Be realistic about your goals. I get it. In the day of social media at times we will see some really cool or awesome posts of people who made some amazing or significant changes on their fitness journey especially in a short period of time. This is NOT the norm. It takes time, dedication and patience. One step at a time.

1. Improve time management- we are often good at knowing how to waste time. That goes for wasting time not only inside the gym but outside as well. Time management requires a level of awareness for what you are doing. It’s an important skill to have to make the best use of your time. Often times we find we have more time the better we manage.

2. Hope to succeed, expect to fail- we as a collective are always so driven on success and do NOT mistaken this for me saying success is anything but good, thats what we strive for. However s*** happens. Life happen. And that’s okay. We can take those opportunities to make adjustments throughout the process.

3. Appreciate the struggle- we do not grow without struggle. We do not learn without a challenge. Appreciate the struggle that comes with different challenges. That’s not only how we learn but we become anti fragile.
