We are thrilled to announce the new USDF/Dressage4Kids U-13 Regional Merit Awards!🎖️🎉

Presented at each of the nine Great American/USDF Regional Championships, this award will recognize the highest and second-highest placing juniors (aged 13 and under) in the Training and First Level Junior/Young Rider Championship class.

This award is made possible with support from Lendon Gray and Dressage4kids. "We want to support the efforts of our youngest competitors and are delighted to recognize the hard work that these kids, and their wonderful instructors and parents, have done to get to their regional championships. We know they’ll be role models for others who are working for similar goals," said Lendon.

It has come to our attention that some sanctioned shows are not offering Introductory level classes. Some only offer them as Opportunity classes. At the NDPC ALL of our members are important to us, from Intro to Grand Prix! We do not understand this, as many of these beginner riders and young horses are the upper level competitors of the future! That being said, we are allowing scores earned in Opportunity Intro classes ridden at USEF/USDF recognized shows, to count towards our year-end-awards.
Have a great show season!

Do you understand the tacit "rules" of riding a dressage test—the ones that aren't in the rule book? FEI and USEF judge Janet Foy offers her insights on the unwritten tenets of test riding to help you maximize your scores.

Lendon Gray told me once an idea she’d had for a horse show: the same rider, on the same horse, would do both the Grand Prix test and Training Level, Test 1. I love it - a demonstration that the training is solid. In Denmark right now, they’ve added a “stretchy circle” to both the Prix St. Georges and Grand Prix tests in national competitions, and I’ve heard top trainers like Carl Hester and Kyra Kyrklund call for such things to be added to the FEI versions of the tests. ⁣

I’m 100% here for it, because I’m just so dang tired of this implication from the confident and loud of the average horsey comments section that, because a horse has been trained to FEI successfully, he must have been wallopped along the way. Anyone who has ACTUALLY made an FEI horse knows that, while there are certainly some spunky individuals, educating them correctly up the levels makes them more rideable, more on the aids, more patient, and more trusting. Frankly my horses are better at Training Level AFTER they’ve shown Grand Prix than before.⁣

In addition to adding in stretchy trot circles to the Big Levels, I personally would like to suggest the addition of a Stupid Pet Tricks bonus section at the end of dressage tests. You can demonstrate your ability to do one tempis with the reins in one hand, or to do some work without your stirrups, or go bridleless, or whatever other fun skills you’ve taught your horse along the way. 🤗
