Yale University Wrestling

Yale University Wrestling Over 110 years of Tradition. The Nation's Oldest Intercollegiate Wrestling Team. We are the Yale Bulldogs. We have a storied past. But the team lived on.

In 1903 the first ever intercollegiate wrestling match was held between the colleges of Yale and Columbia. We are proud to be continuing that history through our re-energized and revitalized Yale Wrestling program. It includes numerous championships (including NCAA D1 championships and gold medals), as well as the election of a Yale wrestler, William Howard Taft as the 27th President of the United

States and 10th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. However in 1993, owing to administrative restructuring of Yale Athletics, the team lost its status as a Yale varsity sport. After our exit from the NCAA, Yale Wrestling moved to the NCWA (National Collegiate Wrestling Association), where we still compete in highly competitive intercollegiate wrestling along with other colleges nationwide. Yale Wrestling has claimed individual titles and national titles in the NCWA. Our student-run team is a Yale Club Sport and is led by captain Michael Robinson

Last weekend the Yale Bulldogs traveled to UConn to compete for the NCWA Connecticut State Dual Championships. After a resounding victory over the University of New Haven (48-18) in the semi-finals, our wrestlers went up against long-time rivals UConn for the state team dual title. Using our deep lineup to capitalize on Uconn opens mixed with several strategic match-ups, the Yale Bulldogs emerged as the CT State Champs by a narrow score of 30-27!

The team victory, which came off of crucial victories at 133 by Tyler Petrochko (Soph, 4-3) and 165 by Seth McNay (Jun, 9-1), was sealed when Batmanlai Ontogtokh (Soph, 2-2) bumped up to 184 and beat his UConn opponent 8-2. After two close periods, Batmanlai took down and turned his opponent in the 3rd period to secure the victory for himself and the team. And the end of the day it was the cumulation of a lot of heart and fight from the Bulldogs that made the reward well-deserved.

This weekend the Yale Bulldogs will be traveling to the University of New Hampshire for the Northeast Regional Conference Championships where the wrestlers will be fighting for a chance to wrestle at the national tournament in a few weeks. With the performance they put on last weekend, there's no doubt they will be successful! Go Bulldogs! Boola Boola!

This last weekend the Yale Bulldogs went to Amherst for the annual Groundhog Day Invitational. After a long day of fighting on Super Bowl Sunday, the team secured a 3rd place individual finish at 165 pounds from junior Seth McNay. McNay (5-1), after losing his second match to the #1 seed, dominated his way through the consolation bracket to snag a 3rd place finish. The team also had strong showings from sophomore Tyler Petrochko and freshman Alex Jang. This weekend (2/13), the Bulldogs will be going to Boston to participate in a quad meet with UNH, MIT, and Providence.

Today after a strong win over UNH, we had a nail-biting loss to UConn for the 'CT Duals Championship.' Wrestling finished with a tie and the match was decided by additional criteria. Wrestlers fought hard and it was a tough loss, but it was a reminder why this sport is so exciting.
