So… what does barefoot massage actually feel like?

I have to admit I was a bit nervous about receiving a barefoot massage. I am not a deep tissue girly, especially since my surgery earlier this year. However! I really loved it! My low back and sacrum have been bothering me for months. Add to that about 14 total hours of drive time for my training, and I still feel GREAT! I have no achiness in my low back! This is because the pressure is broad rather than concentrated. The movement is slow and sustained. And instead of the therapist relying primarily on hands, thumbs, and elbows, the foot becomes another tool for creating pressure and movement.

The broad pressure felt incredibly grounding. There's something about sustained pressure that can make it easier to stop bracing and simply settle into the table.

And no - barefoot massage doesn't mean “more pain = better massage.” Quite the opposite. Good bodywork isn't about proving how much pressure you can tolerate.
It's about finding the right amount of pressure for *your* body.

I'm still putting the pieces together for this offering at Iron Zen. But I'm getting closer. And I'm pretty excited about this one. 🌿

If you have an appointment scheduled in the upcoming weeks and would like to experience a bit of barefoot massage, please let me know! 👣

Let's talk about scars and how massage can be a tool to help.

A scar can be fully healed on the surface and still change underneath. This is one of the many fascinating things I have learned and experienced with my own surgical scars.

Once the incision has closed, the story isn't necessarily finished. Scar tissue can feel tight, restricted, sensitive, numb, itchy, or simply… different. These sensations can change from day to week to months to even years later. Sometimes, the area around the scar changes too.

You may notice pulling when you reach overhead or when you extend your arm. Maybe there is a different sensation when you stretch. Tightness across the chest, shoulder, abdomen, or other areas depending on the surgery.

None of that automatically means something is wrong. Your body has been repairing itself. Scar tissue management is about working with that tissue as it continues to remodel, gently, thoughtfully, and within the appropriate stage of healing.

That's very different from “breaking up a scar.” We aren't fighting your body. We're helping you work with it.

If you have a scar that is creating limitations in your daily living or that you are constantly aware of, I would be honored to talk with you about how massage may be of help to you.

🌼 Wellness Wednesday

Maybe wellness doesn't need to be another thing on your to-do list.

🔲Another workout.
🔲Another supplement.
🔲Another morning routine.

Another thing you feel you're supposed to do perfectly. Maybe sometimes wellness is simply noticing that you're tired… and letting yourself be tired.

Eat lunch before you're starving. ✔
Go to bed instead of scrolling for another hour. ✔
Take the long way home. ✔
Sit outside for ten minutes. ✔
Take a breath before you answer the email. ✔

Your body doesn't need you to become a completely different person. It needs you to pay attention to the person you already are.

Small things count.

Especially when you actually do them. 🩵

Barefoot Massage 👣: What is it?

Not all deep tissue massage has to come from more pressure from the hands.
Barefoot massage uses the therapist's feet to create broad, controlled pressure and steady, sustained touch.

That difference can make it an especially appealing option for people who enjoy deeper work but prefer pressure that is distributed over a larger area.

Barefoot massage supports circulation, encouraging movement of fluid through the tissues, and helps address muscular patterns that contribute to tension and postural changes.

It's a different way of working with the body - using body weight, gravity, and controlled movement rather than relying primarily on the hands.

I'm working toward bringing this modality to Iron Zen Wellness. More to come as I build out the space and get everything ready. 🌿
