Why is sodium so important, and how should you think about it in your own training?

EF Pro Cycling Head of Nutrition Dr. Anna Carceller gives us some answers.

Sodium plays an important role in fluid balance, but that doesn’t mean you need electrolytes in every bottle. For shorter sessions or cooler days, your body is pretty good at regulating sodium and water on its own.

As sessions get longer, temperatures rise and you sweat more, it becomes more important. The key is understanding your own sweat rate and how it changes in different conditions, then adapting your hydration accordingly.

And remember, you don’t necessarily need to replace everything you lose.

There’s a lot more to coaching than writing good training sessions.

Christian Parrett has been coaching for more than a decade, after spending years racing at UCI level himself. He’s also gone on to complete a Master’s in High Performance Endurance Sport, adding to the experience he already had from years in the sport.

But knowing the science is only one part of coaching. A big part of the job is figuring out what each athlete actually needs from him. How much do they want to know? What do they respond to? And how do you build enough trust that when something really matters, they listen?

We caught up with Christian about his racing career, his path into coaching and what he’s learned from more than ten years of working with athletes.

How many carbs do you need on the bike? It depends.

Ride duration, intensity and conditions all affect how much carbohydrate you need. For rides beyond two hours, around 60g per hour is a good starting point, while longer or harder rides may call for 90g or more.

It also depends on what comes next. If you’re training again later that day, or need to recover quickly for another hard session, fueling during the ride becomes more important.

And more isn’t always better. At very high intensities, your body relies more on carbohydrates while fueling can become harder, making what you eat and when you eat it just as important as the total amount.
