Here is how a weekend at Temple Bar Marina works in September.

You leave Las Vegas or Kingman on a Friday afternoon. The temperature out here is about 20 degrees cooler than it was in August, and the canyon walls at dusk look different than they do in summer. Slower. Worth watching.

Saturday morning, launch a boat early. The lake in September is quiet in a way it doesn't get in summer.

Striped bass and largemouth are active when the water starts to cool, so the fishing is better than people expect.

Dinner is at the restaurant Thursday through Sunday. Breakfast from 8 to 11, dinner from 5 to 9. The fish tacos are still on the menu and the frozen cocktails are still worth ordering.

Sunday morning: no schedule. That is the whole point.

Tonight, Temple Bar Marina kicks off its 79th Birthday Weekend.

There's a live DJ, an outdoor movie under the desert sky, a water slide, and food and drink specials running all evening. This is the kind of Friday night where you show up and stay longer than you planned.

Tomorrow is the main event: the Temple Bar Birthday Carnival starts at 4 PM with marina-themed games, live entertainment, themed food booths, family activities, prize raffles, and a grand prize Temple Bar Getaway giveaway.
