THE BASS SPAWN IS UNDER WAY AT KENTUCKY LAKE. Over the past three weeks, we have been getting in the water 🥶 and snorkeling 🤿 to check on experimental bass spawning habitat that we’ve placed in the lake.
We’re happy to report that several nests with bass eggs were found in recent days.
We know from our snorkeling surveys over the past two years that roughly 50 percent of these experimental bass spawning habitat sites will be used by a spawning bass at least once this spring.
Things are a bit delayed this year because of all of these cold nights but are still moving along.
The snorkeling survey allows us to monitor the use of the experimental spawning habitat and provides us with additional information about the ongoing status of the spawns. We can then use those observations to make better recommendations to the TVA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers about lake levels. Flood control is their top priority, but fish spawns are a priority as well and taken into consideration.
As part of the survey, we also collect a small number of eggs or fry from each active nest, so we can identify the species of fish even without seeing the adult male that is guarding the nest. Hatching time is highly dependent on water temperature, but the eggs from these first nests should be hatching early this week if they haven’t hatched already.
It takes an average of five years for a bass in Kentucky Lake to reach 15 inches, so the other eggs in these nests have a long way to go before they end up on the other end of your fishing line, but it’s a start!
