Greetings Nordic Ski Teams, Clubs, and Families,
The American Birkebeiner has announced a few exciting changes for the 2020 GearWest / Rossignol JUNIOR BIRKIE and the Prince Haakon 15K Race.
Please share this scheduling information with your Nordic families and athletes:
GearWest / Rossignol JUNIOR BIRKIE (U8, U10, U12, U14)The event starts behind the Hayward Intermediate and Primary Schools and finishes at the American Birkebeiner Finish Line on Main Street in Hayward. There are two race distances for the different Junior Birkie age groups -- the course has a few new exciting twists for 2020! All registered skiers will get a Junior Birkie hat.
The U12 and U14 age groups are part of the CXC Youth Cup -- athletes will be seated in their respective waves starts according to their CXC Youth Cup Points.
Team Sprint Relay (U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, U19)Official teams must be the same gender and age group. Teams may mix gender and/or age group but will not be eligible for an award.Each age group and gender class is limited to 15 teams.Teams may represent a school or club team, however this is not a requirement.A participant without a team may still register and can be matched with another team.** New in 2020 – a Team Costume Contest! One team in each age group will be awarded the best costume winner- use your imagination and creativity to make the Jr. Birkie relay a crazy, fun event!

PRINCE HAAKON 15K RACE
Spans 15 kilometers from Mosquito Brook Road, through the forests, to the finish line in downtown HaywardThe ideal event for first-time racers and skiers looking for a shorter eventIs open to both skate and classic style skiers age 13 and older.Your start time will be recorded when you cross the start lineIncludes the Hatchery Aid Station at 7 km from the startIs a timed event and all skiers will be issued timing chips and official results will be postedAll finishers will receive a commemorative medalNEW in 2020: As part of the ABSF’s efforts to promote youth development in the sport, we will be offering a U19 and U16 age class and wave for the Prince Haakon. The U19/U16 athletes will be the first off the starting line, in their own wave start, and will receive age class awards on the Finish Line Podium!Prince Haakon Race Day ScheduleU19/U16 Boys start at 1:15 pmU19/U16 Girls start at 1:20 pmMass start at 1:25 pmLaid back start between 1:25 and 1:35 pmAll start times will be recorded when you ski through the start tower. Winners will be based on overall, chip time and not based on the first to cross the finish line.Prince Haakon AwardsPrince Haakon finishers will receive a medal when they cross the finish line in Hayward.The top three overall women and men will be recognized in a ceremony in the Celebration Plaza at 2:30 pm on Friday.*Winners based on overall, chip time, not on the first to cross the finish line.There is no technique distinction in the awards.New in 2020! Its time to register for the 20th annual GEARWEST Junior Birkie!

Race day is right around the corner!

The organizing committee has made a few minor changes to the GearWest Jr. Birkie schedule (both the individual races and relays) to help make the day run smoothly.

To be a "seated" skiers for the Junior Birkie, a CXC Youth Cup event, each athlete must have a MyXC Skiwerx Membership, points will be made retro-active for new memberships.

PLUS, some really awesome course changes:

The GearWest Junior Birkie will start behind the Hayward Primary School and end on Main Street.

The course has been revised, and will include a few new twists and turns to add to the Birkie Fever and excitement of the events of 1.5 K, 4K and 6K

The 4K and 6K course will take skiers over the Birkie Bridge and back again. YES, the course now has an extra HILL.

The team relays remain on Main Street, and will continue to electrify both athletes and spectators with its Olympic format.

The Seeley Hills Classic is the second-largest annual classic cross-country ski event on the Birkebeiner Trail. The 42K race is an American Birkebeiner qualifying race, and the first of six races in the CXC Marathon Cup.
