As many of you are already aware, the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries has instituted new rules regarding shark fishing from Nantucket's beaches. Here are a few thoughts.
The regulations state a circle hook with a gap larger than 5/8" of an inch cannot be used IN CONJUNCTION WITH a wire leader longer than 18". Meaning that if your leader is 17" you can use whatever size circle hook you like.
I think virtually everyone legally targeting brown sharks uses a hook with a gap larger than 5/8", so the regulation really missed the mark on appropriate hook size. But using 17" of wire in front of a few more feet of heavy monofilament is pretty close to the preferred method of most seasoned land-based shark folks anyway.
So don't let the new regulations ruin your shark fishing! Trim that wire section down to 17.9" and you can still use a reasonable hook.
