Thanks to those of you who leash their pets. Today a dog aggressively barked at me as I rounded a corner. No owner in sight, no leash. The owner was far behind the dog.
Thankfully, I’m not afraid of dogs. However, if a small child was rounding the corner, that would have been terrifying for the child. I also know adults who are afraid of dogs. Please be courteous to others on the trail and follow this rule.

Good news!🌲☀️
The Bodenburg Butte trail will be open on Monday 🤩
I had the privilege to speak with property owner Patty Sandvik, as I was checking if this trail was open yet.
I’m thankful she was there so I had the opportunity to meet her. I gave that sweet lady a big hug and thanked her for closing the trail for erosion control for ALL of us who dearly love this trail. Happy Hiking👟❤️

South Trail Closed!

There was a black bear sighting on the West Butte Trail this week. Please use caution, be aware of your surroundings, and make lots of noise if you choose to hike this trail.

If you have been up the West Butte Trail lately you probably noticed some additions. This past season we added posts and additional cable railings to the wooden crib steps. This is an effort to keep trail users from going off trail and cutting the corners. People cut the corners or hiking next to the steps erodes the trail, undercuts the wooden steps, and damages the plants clinging to the Butte. This damage will eventually lead to the destruction of the trail and would mean having to re-do the entire trail, at a great monetary cost, or closing one of the most popular hiking trails in the Valley. Our hope is that the additional posts and cables will add many years of life to this wonderful resource so that residents and visitors can continue to see the amazing view from the top! We would like to thank the Mat Su Trails and Parks Foundation and the Usabeli Coal Mine for their financial support of this project, as well as the Student Conservation Association for thier work.
