So much fun with Winooski School District on the water! Spending the day with these 11th graders made our hearts so happy - they were vibrant, curious, engaged, and competitive as heck! They didn't just learn how to paddle and race, they learned to collaborate, cooperate, and be a team. Some were understandably nervous at first, but the smiles at the end of the day were priceless. Truly beautiful day with beautiful people!!

Incredible morning learning how to huli and surf on the OC1s with Blaine Mart this morning! This inaugural mini-camp was definitely a success, and we’ll be planning more for sure.

Thanks Blaine for your patience, clear explanations, and sharing just how amazing a complement outrigger paddling is for dragon boaters. Looking forward to the next one!

Nice job out there Sandy, Georgie, Will, and Suzanne!! You all were amazing!! Who’s coming to the next one?

Sometimes you just have to pull the dragon boat up to a dockside bar and have a 🍺 and a 🍔. (FYI this is a Malia tradition. Yeah, we’re THAT cool.)

Myth: Dragon boat is a women’s sport.

Also a myth: dragon boat is just for breast cancer survivors.

We hear this all the time. And yes, while there are women’s divisions and breast cancer survivor divisions, they’re just that. Racing divisions within a much (MUCH) larger arena.

There are also other divisions like:
Youth
Adult
Senior
Para-athlete
Veteran
Medical and support divisions (think sight-impaired and all cancer paddlers)

Then there are crew classes: women’s, mixed, and open—which have no gender restrictions but are typically male or mostly male.

Then there are age classes within both the youth and adult divisions: under 16, under 18, under 24, premier (usually 25-39 but open to all if you’re good enough), 40+ (Senior A), 50+ (Senior B), and 60+ (Senior C).

And recently, Dragon Boat Canada 🇨🇦 created a 70+ (Senior D) division. (Don’t be fooled, some of their seniors can kick serious butt.)

And finally there are the boats themselves. There are two sizes: standard (seats 20 paddlers) and small (seats 10 paddlers).

At Malia, we currently race mixed and women’s in the Premier, Senior A, and Senior B classes. And we race both boat sizes.

We’ve still got a few openings in our last Bootcamp of 2026. For more info and to come give it a try, DM us!

You miss the team.
You miss belonging.
You miss the competition.

Just because THAT sport is done, doesn't mean your athletic career is over.

We've got a few spots left in our final bootcamp of 2026. Andy, Tim, Jeff, and Tony will be showing up. Come join them!

An eerily silent, magical night on the water. No other boats out, it was like we were the last humans on earth. Most of our crew is off on vacation, so we took the opportunity to stretch out and challenge ourselves. Got a little rained on but the water above and below were both warm.

Plus Tony regaled us with tales of how the Adirondacks were formed, why there are beluga whale skeletons in the lake, 200mile deep ice sheets, and more. It was a training sesh AND a history lesson!
