Welp, last night was chaos. Had a decent start to the heat race until I watched a car spark and light fire from their fuel cell as I was about to attempt a pass on them, I backed off the throttle and gave about 2 car lengths of space between me and said car on fire waiting for them to call the red flag. Thankfully the driver was okay and our safety crew got there quickly. On the restart another driver hit a bird and disintegrated it in front of me which was wild and so the last few laps just weren't right for me.
Started over mentally and was looking forward to the main race...
Wrecks are not an "if" but "when" in this sport. They will happen and they best we can do is minimize the damage to both ourselves, cars, and others around us. I was hoping my "when" wouldn't be this soon but it was and the best we can do is stay positive and rebuild. Throttle got caught (still unknown why or how) as I was on the apex of the turn, already about 3/4 into the throttle and the best I could do in the split .25 sec was lift the throttle and try to ride the wall rather than slam head on and over it.(Ps Ross Chastain did that much better 😂).
It could have been so so much worse both for myself and the car, I kept the car from going over the wall, avoided coming back down on the feild of cars that were behind me, minimized the damage to the car and was able to joke around and look at the brightside by the end of the night.
Was I excited to truly race a feild of cars competitivly? Absoultey.
But s**t happens and sometimes it isn't the fault of anyone. Because that just means I'm coming back to look for redemption in a few weeks.
I say it alot but it never feels like enough.. Thank you so our incredible safety crew for keeping us as safe as possible, especially Allen Garren Engebretson who cares about us more than we expect and won't take "I'm okay" as an answer unless he hears it several times and even then might not belive you and will walk with you to the push truck and help you in. You are the goddamn best Allen and never forget that.
Of course can't forget the best push truck driver ever Mike Cantonwine who not only drove my sore pi**ed off ass back to my pit but made sure I was okay several times the rest of the night.
